Custom Exhaust Project

Car is a 67 Mustang Coupe with a 200 in it, for people who dont know.

Ok so I plan on buying Patriot side exhaust pipes and fabricating an exhaust that comes down from the side of my I6 into a muffler turns back up a little bit and then goes to the side pipes.

Does anyone have any experience with Patriot products?

Will different mufflers make my car sound different or will this xhaust setup make the exhaust sound less like a V8. If mufflers sound diffent I am aiming to get SOMETHING like the V8 "glug glug" sound. My stock exhaust sort of sounds like that and I like it that way, how much will this change me exhaust sound? Also will the Pacemaker Dual Outlet Header help alot with this project?

Here are some diagrams that I just wipped up for different ways that I am thinking the exhaust could be done:

i vote for splitting it and running glasspacks. definitely will not get you a V8 sound but it sounds demonic under load

I think I am going to do the 4th one with glasspacks enstead of a muffler.

How far off from the stock sound will glasspacks be?

Wow thanks Stubby I went back and got this information. Must not have seen it before

They come in 50" 60" 70" and 80" lenghts

Information:
Give your vehicle that custom look with a classic shielded side exhaust system. A large 3" o.d. pipe and low back pressure six-sided louvered core muffler guarantee performance and produce that distinctive power tone. Complete installation flexibility is built in with the full 360° rotation feature on both inlet and outlet pipes. Includes mounting hardware. See universal side pipe hook-up kit below to complete exhaust system.

I have seen, heard and ridden in the car of "mkeily". That has a mild cammed 250-2V with Pacemakers and twin pipes, no crossover.

Sound at low RPM is reminiscent of a Cleveland with no crossover pipe. Harder use gives a more distinct note, but still pleasant.

In your case, I would run the glasspack or louvred sidepipes in your last picture and no intermediate muffler.

the glug-glug sound is contrary to performance, which is all about balance at the desired RPM range.

However, I'd suggest a 1-5-3 / 6-2-4 dual-out header, no crossover and a pair of cheap turbo mufflers for the desired sound.

Dual out header feeding the two side pipes, no additional muffler. X-pipe might help performance, not sure how much it would complicate routing the exhaust. The fewer the bends, the better the flow, the better the performance.

If you want to keep it quiet, than use your drawing #1 or #3.

You need roller rockers, gear drive and a lumpy cam with lots of overlap, then!

But truly, it will NEVER sound like a V-8 when driven hard. Neither does an E-type Jaguar or Aston-Martin DB5, so you're in good company.

I didnt say V8 that time I said classic muscle. I beleve I can get something of a sound like that out, because to me it already sounds like that a bit.

I would definitely upgrade the stock manifold since you are redoing the rest of the exhaust. It will be worth it.

I have the Pacemaker dual outlet header with the Jet Hot coating. The header is great but the coating did not hold up. That does not seem like a common occurence, I just got lucky. :?

The header looks great and fits well. There was a noticeable difference with the new exhaust system, especially when I installed the 2bbl carburetor.

I have the clifford dual out with jet hot coating. The coating did not hold up in my case, either. This header might be good for an application like yours because it is relatively short, giving you a little more room to route your pipes to the sides. I'll echo those who said that if you want a tough performance sound, just go header to side pipes. Simple, inexpensive and effective.

Whatever header you buy, make sure to use the metallic exhaust manifold gasket that Mike sells. DO NOT use the white gasket from Clifford's. It actually burns up and cracks. Lame.

i dont want to hijack this thread but how long did it take for your guys jet hot to give out? i've had mine for over 2k miles and it looks like brand new and you can still touch the headers 10 mins after you shut down

i'm just hoping mine isnt gonna poop out soon here

Yea I am also wondering about this jet hot problem. I was also wondering where exactly the Pacemaker header ends on the car, is it at the bottom? I want it to be easy to make the side pipes hook up but at the same time the fabrication with the clifford headers seems a bit harder and more work.

:D Afriend locally has headers with the Jet Hot(R)coating.Been running them for 2 years now.No problems.Contact them and they should make it right.
