Just thought I'd pass this along. Double check that your timing marks are on the outside edge of the pulley before you install. If not you should go ahead and remedy that while it's easy. My new one was only marked on the block side so I couldn't use it for a reference. I figured this out after everything was all buttoned up. ....

:hmmm: Don`t know where you got yours,BUT they are generaly marked on the OD of the balancer.NOT the front or backside.
Good luck.Have fun.Be safe.

Got it from CI. I was shocked too. I double checked putting it on and just checked again yesterday. Still had the puller mounted to the old one so there was no way to confuse geometry. Like I said: weird.....

Can you take off the late model timing bracket and use the old style one cast into the cover thats what I used.

I considered that too. Odds are I'll probably tune to the point of peak vaccume now. Haven't looked yet to see if the timing cover bolts will come out without a lot of hassle. I've never tuned to vaccume before but it might be time to give that a go.

I'm definitely learning on this machine though. Between my renegade crank (balancer bolt size that does not match any documented crank I can find) and little odds and ends like this are keeping me on my toes :D

On my 4.9L engine, I find that setting timing using a vacuum gauge is very good. What I have found to work is to set to greatest vacuum [~21" Hg] and then back off 1-1 1/2". If left at greatest vacuum, pinging occurs.

Once set, drive and place under a load. If no pinging occurs, reset the timing by increasing 1/2 point of vacuum [advancing timing] and drive again. Once you detect pinging, retard the timing slightly and record the vacuum reading.
