HI ALL
I'm looking at storing the 170 for orginal applacation and putting in a 200. I was just kind of woundering if any 61 comets came with the 200 just so it won't look to out of place.
Thanks
Tim

i'm not sure if they did, but the 170 and the 200 look exactly the same* on the exterior, and everything is a bolt in, so if you want it too look original, it still would

* depending on the year of the block, if it's a 7 main block, it'll look different than a 170 with a 5 main block

The seven main 200 was introduced in 1965 but there was a 200 in 1963 with 4 mains. There was not a 200 ford six in 1961.

As already mentioned, no 200s prior to the 63 4-main, and I believe it was only available in the Fairlane (at least my 4-main block has a C3OE casting code).

The only two options for 60-61 were the 144 and the Thrift Power 170 with the 4 main blocks and kidney shaped combustion chambers

200's were not used in Comets until '65. 63's were available with a 144, optional 170 or 260 V-8. '61 Comets only came with 144 or 170 optional. 200's were introduced in '64 and had 4 mains then in '65 7 mains.

As far as a 200 looking out of place in a '61 Comet, I really doubt anyone would notice. The only outward indication that its a 200 would be 5 freeze plugs and the PCV valve.

HELLO "45

.....MY FIRST 200 WAS A 1964 COMET. IT WAS A SEVEN MAIN AND HAD A YELLOW VALVE COVER. THEY ONLY CAME WITH AUTOMATICS FOR 1964. IN 1965 YOU COULD GET THE 200 WITH MOST ANY TRANNY. I WAS VERY IMPRESSED WITH THE SET UP. IT WAS MUCH MORE POWERFUL THAN THE 170 STANDARD.

.....I KEPT THE MOTOR AND PUT IN ANOTHER CAR.. A 1961 COMET TUDOOR. I ALSO CHANGED THE TRANNY TO THE THREE SPEED STD. THE CAR RAN SUPER AND I WAS GETTING OVER 26 MPG ON THE ROAD. THE THING I REMEMBER THE MOST ABOUT THAT CAR WAS THAT I COULD LEAVE A VW BUG AT THE STOP LIGHT WITH NO PROBLEM AT ALL. ALSO THE DODGE 225 SLANT MOTOR WASN'T LEAVING ME AT THE STOP LIGHT LIKE THEY HAD BEFORE.... IT WAS CLOSE BUT THEY STILL WON OUT.

.....MY WIFE WAS HIT IN THAT CAR SO I TOOK THE MOTOR AND TRANNY AND PUT IT IN A 1961 (RED) STATIONWAGON. I RAN THAT CAR UNTIL 1974. THE NEIGHBOR BOUGHT IT AND REBUILT IT. IT HAD OVER 160,000 MILES ON IT AND NEVER REBUILT. .HE PUT IT IN A 1965 CLUBWAGON AND HE DROVE IT ALL OVER THE USA . HE THEN MOVE TO NEW YORK STATE.

..... THAT SOLD ME ON HOW RUGGED AND STRONG THE MOTOR WAS. I WENT OUT AND BOUGHT A 1968 200 MOTOR AND THAT'S WHAT I'M USING NOW. .....THAT'S THE HISTORY ....... AND IT STOPPED IN 1983. SAD.....IT WAS SUCH A GOOD MOTOR THE ONLY PROBLEM WAS THAT ( BLANK-IT-Y BLANK HEAD.)

.....I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO MY NEW 221 MOTOR IN MY COMET NOW. IT IS STILL IN THE SHOP BEING REBUILT AND WE'RE HAVING A PROBLEM WITH THE CAM BEARINGS.HOPEFULLY I'LL HAVE IT OUT AND RUNNING THIS MONTH.

Thanks everyone for your replys. I think I'll put the 200 I have in it and keep the 170 incase (thats a big incase, plan on keeping it for ever) I sell it so atleast the new owner well have the opetion to rebuild it and keep it stock matching.
