Hey Guys,
I got myse;f a 67 mustang with a 200ci and auto trans. Im 15 so this car is being built as my driver wen i get my permit next year. I finaly got the car to turn over by the key instead of having to jump it through the solinod, but the car isnt getting any spark. I changed my coil, but nothing. I bought an ignition kit but dont wanna dive in and ruin my distributor from lack of knowledge. So my question is how do i put these parts onto the distribuor. The parts are points condensores, and rotor.
Thanks for the time,
Ronny

Ronny,

Make sure you have voltage to the coil with the key on and in start.

Should be pretty easy if the old parts are in the distributor. Put them in the same way.

Been a while sense i've done it, but the points are held in by 2 screws and can be adjusted.
The condensor probably 1 screw, with a wire going to the points and one outside of the distributor.
Leave the wires connected to the cap and take the cap off and lay out of way.
You should see the rotor pressed on in the center, it just pulls off.
The points and condensor are around the inside edge on the base plate.
Hook everything up like it is already.
There should be some insulators on the screw that the black condensor wire hooks to on the outside of the distributor, these are there to keep the condensor from grounding to the distributor.
After putting the points in you should adjust them so that the gap barely opens when the lobe goes around on the distributor. You can manually turn the motor over until the lobe is opening the points and adjust it then.

Tighten everything down and put the new rotor on then if you got a new cap, wire it the same way and stick it on.

Hope this helps, you may can find a manual online that gives more specifics.

what helps alot of us is talking pictures as we go, just in case we can't figure out how to put it back to gether again, we just look at the picture we took while taking it apart.

the best way to learn is to do it yourself. be aware of how it comes off, where # 1 is on the cap, I honestly can't help with points... and take your time to do it once right.

Good luck!

You should also look into the ignition switch condistion and wire from it to the coil without power to coil you still won't have power to the distrib points even if you change point's etc. Another area to look at is the neutral safety switch if its an auto trans car they sometimes stop working due to being out of adjustment from old settled motor mounts look for shifter not lining up with the center of the N's position

Sounds like this is a car that has not run in a while?

Have checked to see if there is spark at the Coil wire that goes into the distributer cap? If so then the problem would lie inside the distributer, maybe a broken or missing rotor or a bad cap.

With the ignition key in the on position check the voltage at the coil terminals to GND, one or both, depending on whether the points are open or closed, should be 6 to 12 VDC. If you don't see any voltage at the coil then that would need to be fixed first.

Next remove the distributer cap and have some one try to start the car. Watch the points, they should open and close as the engine spins. If they don't then they may be worn out. Replace them and adjust the point gap with the plastic cam follower on the highest point of the distributer cam, to .019 inches, that’s Nineteen thousands. If the points are opening and closing then if would be likely that the condenser has gone bad, replace it and test the coil wire again for spark.

Let us know what you find
