I have installed all new DSII parts in my Bronco 170 and it ran fine for a few days.

Today I had it idling and it just died. When it quit it ran backwards for a few degrees blew of some vacuum caps, I started it again and it ran rough for a minute and would not idle it died again and now I get no spark at all. :x

I checked fuel OK

I checked coil (accel) resistance OK I think.

Any suggestions? How can I check the control mod? :?

Im not a Ford expert yet so I cant give you specific numbers but you can check the pick up coil with an ohm meter. The pick up coil is the part in the dist. Someone else will have to tell you what resistance you should have and wire colors. One is ground, the other two are the coil. You should get a change in the resistance if you turn the dist or crank the engine. While you are doing that you should also operate the vac advance to make sure and flex the whole harness to make sure there is not a break in the wire. If the rotor is not turning the ohms/resistance should not change. Other than that the olny other test I know of would be to confirm that you have 12 volts (not 9.x through a ballast resistor or wire) going to the + side of the coil and the proper wire into the control box/module. You can still use your dwell/tach meter hooked up to the - terminal of the coil like you did on your old points system to see if you are getting a tach signal when cranking. Im not sure on the Fords but I would assume that the module/control box is grounded through the case so checking your mounting area/method for a good connection would be a place to start. Again a Ford guy can confirm if that is true or not.

Dont forget to look at the basic mechanical stuff like did the whole dizzy slip out of time? Is the drive gear ok? Timing chain skip?

Hope this helps.

Did you buy a new or rebuilt dizzy?
Did you buy a new module/control box?
What car did you say it was for or get it from?

Just wondering because Im thinking of converting also.

Thanks

TJH,

I bought all of it new and it is in a 69 Bronco. Thanks for the info.

If youu afre sure that nothing else is causing the rough idle I would pull the dizzy and check out the gears... if they look ok reinstall and make sure that it is in the right position

also you should check to see that you are getting spark to the plugs, if no and you have eliminatd the could as the problem chances are its the module

My grandparents used to call duraspark systems neversparks because they always died. they had a Ford LTD with a 302 and DSII ign, they went through about a modual per week of the cheap parts store moduals until they bought 1 from Ford, that modual lasted a long time. there friend who I also know had a 80's Jeep Wagoneer with a 258 I6 and it had a DSII modual wired into it, it had intermittent start up problems, wouldn't start hot, ect... get a modual from the dealership and it should be good
