i have a duraspark 1 distributer . not sure what the difference is between the 2nd one, but i did a search and found nothing. my stock dist with pertronix has a vacuum leak somewhere in the diaphram. and i want to upgrade to this distributer. is it possible? if so what do i have todo? to unsure a correct install. also i will not be using the ignition module if i dont have to bc i would like to hook it up to my msd 6a box. is this feesable ? any help appreciated thanks

I don't have a small block six but I'll put in my 2 cents. I think this is an excellent plan, the DS1 with MSD should work just fine. Go for it :D Since you already own the DS1 and you would need to buy the controller, just do the upgrade to MSD. You could even hide the MSD box and have a stealth ignition, the DS1 looks a lot like the original equipment, unlike the big ugly DS2.

so you think it will work for my application? 200ci 66 block. i think it should. what about stabing the distributer? make sure you are on top dead center when you take the old dist out and the rotor is on the #1 plug. then take the old out and put the new in correct. with the rotor on the #1 plug right. thanks for the help

Yep, that's the way to do it if you've turned the engine over with the distributor out. If you only remove/reinstall the distributor, and don't move the crank while the distributor is out, then it doesn't matter where the rotor points when you start this process, just note where it is (and the relative position of the vacuum canister), and be sure to reinstall it pointing at the exact same spot.

Of course, to simplify things, bringing #1 to TDC on compression stroke and noting position of vacuum canister and rotor prior to removing the distributor is the best approach. 8)

It's been a while since you posted, so may be this is a good time to ask how it all worked out.

If I remember my research, The MAIN difference between a DuraSpark I and II is the distributor cap.

The II has a twopiece cap and heavier duty spark plug wires and boots. The "I" looks like a points distributor ( great for stealth if you're going for a stock look) Otherwise I would switch to the II cap, rotor and wires to achieve less spark leakage and less spark crossfire inside the distributor.

Ford HAD to have a reason to change. The bean counters would NEVER let the engineers spend more money for a part if it wasn't ABSOLUTELY necessary.

Other than that your plan shold work fine.

Hope it worked

install went well not problems. but i did find another problem. my timing chain is pretty streached. crank pulley moves about 2 inches before the dist. rotor moves. but the car runs fine not sure whats up. i have 8mm accel plug wires on there way to my house so after that the ignition should be good to go. thanks for the help
