Duraspark swap question

I have read here and on other sites where people are using a GM module in place of the Duraspark module. Is the GM module better for some reason?

It's primarily cost...the GM module in the $15 range and very small, it's easy to carry a spare in the glove box. Very easy to wire up.

The Duraspark module does have the advantage of the white wire, which allows for easier starts. I've been running the duraspark module, but I like the advantages of the GM unit.

the other significant benefit to the GM HEI module is that it was designed for a system that runs a full 12v through the coil, whereas the duraspark was designed to run with a resistor (or resistor wire) to reduce voltage. and naturally, having higher voltage into a coil designed for it produces a hotter, better spark. when i upgraded my car to the HEI module and hotter coil (from newer ford with TFI ignition), i noticed a significant improvement in power and economy, and i stopped having problems with my spark plugs gathering ash deposits. however, most of this benefit is only had when you do the full job, which includes the hotter coil and a full 12v to it.

Mine is a Duraspark II. Maybe I did something wrong (I did follow wiring diagrams), but I'm running a full 12 volts to the coil (it's a 12 volt coil, of course). No problems with the duraspark module handling the coil. My pink resistor wire is closing a relay that sends the full 12 v to the coil.

8) the GM module as indicated is small enough to carry a spare module, or two, in the glove box or tool box. i have used the chrysler module on a couple of my duraspark conversions because i prefer its overall reliability to the others.

Thanks for all the input.

Is the ballast resistor to protect the coil, or the points?

Does the GM module need to be mounted to a heat sink?

ballast resistor protects the points.

Yes you would need a heat sink for the GM

Hey rbohm:

Do you have any further info on using the Chrysler ingition module in place of the DSII? LIke wiring diagrams, pictures, P/Ns or links to some one else who has done so?

8) check out www.gofastforless.com for more information. thats where i got the wiring diagram from. they also show other modules as well.
