EFI conversion fuel pumps

I am working on a few efi conversion projects and was wondering about fuel pumps and fuel pump issues. My big concern is without an in tank pump and baffles that there could be issues especially when the tank levels get low. My thought that seems to easy to be true:

Use the mechanical pump to feed some sort of small tank (maybe a quart or so). The proper electric pump would suck fuel out of the bottom of this tank. The injector return line would run into the top of this tank. There would also be a return line back to the main tank on the top of the little one.

Im sure there is some obvious reason this wont work?

For the tank I was thinking of looking at some sort of industrial or marine fuel filter. They would be about the right capacity and have the option of several fittings plus it would be a filter.

Ideas? Thoughts? Or is it truly not needed and just go with the frame mounted electric and not worry about it.

using intank pumps to empty a fuel tank before removing it form a car I have been able to get nearly all fuel out of the tank, about as much as a mech pump will remove. does someone make a drop in pickup for a mustang tank to convert to EFI or a tank to convert it? sometimes spending money to do things proper really pays off in the end with drivability and reliability.

myself I found a 5 gal GM tank I am using. small easy to mount in thne trunk and has a built in sender and intank pump and fill cap. total cost was $100 (but included the pump and sender so not a bad deal really) it uses factory connections which I converted to -6AN with a pair of $7 fittings from earls I think it was. this is temp for me until I get a new tank made up (thinking of placement under the rear seat area and my mufflers mounted in the rear ALA corvette style.

TJ,
There are hundreds, maybe thousands of old cars that have been converted to EFI out there. I've never heard of any problems with the fuel pick up. The only thing is that you need to mount the pump as low as you can so it doesn't have to lift the fuel out of the tank.
On Kelly's Falcon we're using an EFI electric pump with a fuel return into the original tank. Works great! The only modifications were to increase the size of the pick up tube (1/2") and to plumb the return line to the filler neck.

I just bought an inline Walbro GLS 392 electric pump, and it has 3/8" barb fittings on either end and cost me $118.00 out the door. Ebay has them. It is capable of 60 gph @ 40psi at 12 volts, and up to 600Hp.
This is to replace the Carter mech. pump, it simply ran out of fuel during long periods under 10 psi of boost...at 5psi of boost the mech. pump worked well, though.
