Electric and points ignition --- HELP

Hey all,

I have a 66 Mustang that i dropped a 250 in (from 1975). I've been having trouble with the duraspark II ignition and was thinking to just swap to points. Will a 200 distributor with points fit? As in, is it the same size as far as the 250 electronic distributor? In whichcase, would i be able to pull out a points distributor from a 200 i have laying around and put that into the 250? If that doesn't work, would i be able to swap in an earlier year 250 distributor with points? ie: 1972

Thanks a bunch!

Connor

Hi, what is wrong with your car? I would diagnose and fix it, not go backwards. Many of the older Fords have corrosion at the connections and simple wiring issues. Look at the wiring first. Good luck.

You went through a lot to get your 250 in may as well get the most out of it so use the DSII. Lots of capable members on here can help you.
And then let us know how it runs!

1 problem U may encounter is making too many changes at once or in rapid succession - this will make it difficult to diagnosis the source of a problem.
One of the best mods to these motors (if U have a '68 + carb) is to combine it w/the DSII as bmbm suggests. A '77 system (wires to distrub, moduel, etc) is easy to aquire at the pic'n pull or at big box prts store. Can't tell even if it's the ele system right now - but that's me (a non-mechanic).

Swapped to DSI for the time being and she runs great! The DSIi will go in later but i need her to drive for now. Any chance anyone has a waterpump pulley for a '75 250? I believe from a maverick. No AC. One or two slots. About 6 1/2" diameter. The one i have wobbles a touch. Might as well see if i can replace it as the water pump leaks as well ugh haha. Any links or anything on the pulley would be great! (For places i can buy one etc)

Good to hear it is running well does it have the performance you expected? Does the hood close ok?
Something to consider would be getting a rebuilt DSII custom curved for your 250. You can get one from wsa on this forum.

Haven't officially driven it yet. It still needs the water pump to be replaced. The 250 originally needed an extra inch or so so i added lower mounting points in the motor mounts to drop it more. If anyone else plans to do this, be careful not to lower it too much. The starter can hit the bars and links crossing under the engine itself. She goes out for paint in a month to a month in a half

Not sure about pulley sources maybe in parts wanted section of this site. Let us know how it drives as it is somewhat of a rare swap using a 250 in an early Mustang. You may need a limited slip on it.
