hey...is there any paint f r the block that comes in a can that I can paint on for temporary nice-ness?

POR products do a few engine paints in tins to brush on. Sometimes this is easier than the exhaustive masking required to spray in situ. Clean the surface well, first.

PP66 - Welcome back! :D It must be 8-9 months since you last were around.

Adam.

I think sometime around 1968 Ford started painting their engines Ford Corporate Blue(the dark Ford Blue)Everything on the long block was Blue as I recall. The accessories were not painted blue.
This is all from my faded memory.

I thought from the early 60's all passenger car engines were blue and truck engines were red?

But yes any auto parts place should have engine paint and it usually lists what year its supposed to be close to.

IIRC, 1965 was the last year for black engines with color-coded valve covers and air cleaners. Starting in '66, the whole engine (minus accessories and exhaust manifolds) was painted Ford Blue. Hope this helps!

My 65 is ford red fairlane is ford red. Don't know if this helps.

Here's a quote from The Ford Falcon News' "Rules for Six Cylinder Cars" which contains all you need to know about the engine colors:

"Color of block and head assembly: Gloss Black (Hi-Temp)on all engines. The only exception is as follows: After June 1, 1965 production date 200 C.I. engines (the entire assembly including valve covers and breather) were a medium Ford blue except the 289-it was Gloss black with Gold Valve Covers and air Cleaner(Gloss Black snout).

Note: Some exceptions have occurred on cars after the June 1st 1965 date. Such as- an original owner, never touched car with a 170 engine. It came from the factory with Ford medium blue block and cylinder head with red/orange valve cover and breather.

Color of Valve Cover and Air breather:

144-Ford medium Blue

170-Red/Orange

200-Red/Orange (after June 1, 1965 production date entire engine Ford Medium Blue)

Recommended Paint codes:

Red-Orange, Dupli-Color DE-1605 or Martin Seynour 7892

Ford Medium Blue, Dupli-Color DE-1606 or Martin Seynour 7958

Engine Black, Dupli-Color DE-1613 or Martin Seynour 7882

Krylon Semi-Gloss Black code#1613 (used anyplace we refer to semi-gloss black or chassis black)

Dupli-Color Hi-Temp Engine Black-code# DE 1613 (For Block and Heads)

Dupli-Color Red-Orange code#DE-1605 for valve covers and air breathers on 170 & 200 cubic inch.(until June 1st 65) and the 63 260 V8 (sprint has chrome)

Dupli-Color Blue code#DE1606 for valve covers and air breathers on all 144 cubic inch, the 64 260 V-8 (sprint has chrome), the 65 170 &200 after June 1st 65, and "ALL" blocks, valve covers, and air breathers 66-70."

Hope this clears things up.

Steve's touched on a relevant issue here: The cover was painted OFF the engine. Thus, the securing bolts were plated only.

Here (which I assume followed the Ford US procedure), engines were painted assembled to the tranny after the mid-60s; before that tranny paint was dependent on the actual unit. Plenty seem to have no paint at all.

Fitted after the block/head paint were the mounts, fuel pump, distributor and hold-down, breather tube, balancer, generator or alternator bracket, spark plugs, coil/bracket, kickdown bracket, ground to head, exhaust manifold, senders and of course carb and throttle spring. It seems odd that they left this stuff 'til later while pre-installing the thermostat and water pump.

Cheers, Adam.
