Engine oils with the proper additives to prevent cam wear

Interesting. Note that they don't actually admit that there's a problem, even though they've got two solutions.

All of the new engines have roller lifters & can use the SM oil.

The big problem with most ford engines is the small distributor gear.

You have to match the gear to the camshaft material, be it a cast core or a steel billet. This is on a ford V-8 engine.

Our old six cylinders are a prime canadate for wear.

The only gears that are worth a darn are in this order.

1. Crow cams distributor gear from austrailia.
2. A nitrated ac delco gear.
3. A stock ac delco gear.

I have run all three & only the first 2 can survive an already scored camshaft drive gear for the longest time.

I have sold a bunch of the custom nitrated ac delco gears which test out at close to 50 rockwell C in hardness.

This engine has many weak areas & this distributor gear wear deal is the number 1 weak area. Bill

Bill,

I'm confused about the whole dist gear issue. I am running the DUI dizzy and will be installing one of Mike's clay smith cams. Do I have to worry about changing out my dist gear? :?

Gene, if the present gear on your DUI has no evidence of scoring don't worry at all with a new camshaft.

Lube it with moly lube just like the camshaft lobes & you will be fine.

However if there is scoring on the gear then you need to replace it.

Poor quality distributor gears are what damage the camshaft gear.

I had some ac delco gears nitrided to close to 45-50 rockwell C.

At least if you have to replace the gear use an ac delco gear.

But the hardened gear is a better choice & a crow cams gear is the best.
