Engine rebuild or remanufactured engine.

I was wondering if anyone had their 200s professionally rebuilt and how much it cost. I am finally considering buying a remanufactured motor or having my existing one rebuilt. I cracked the head near one of the exhaust bolts, but I still have a good exhaust gasket seal. I think my block is pretty solid.

I'd get a head from somewhere and have it all rebuilt at the same time, or just buy the rebuilt one in advance and send what you got back to the seller,,,local clubs should have an idea as to who to trust,, some guys you can go to,will rebuild the whole thing and will offer a 10 year warranty for X amount of dollars

What is your ultimate goal for this engine? A mostly stock daily driver? Hopped up?

I bought a rebuilt engine from a parts house, over 10 years ago. I have put 140k miles on it, and still gets me to and from work every day. It was cheap and easy.

Get a hold of a Chilton's, Clymer's or Haynes book. Read what it takes, tehn decide how much you would dare do. You can tear it apart and inspect, before deciding on a short block, long block or rebuild. It's fun to tear things apart.

If it aint broke don't fix it.

With the information at hand this is the best advice I can give you. Drive the wheels off untill something requires you to do major work on the engine, then get it all at once.

My 200 was rebuilt after it blew. It was rebuilt and bored .040 for about 2.5k. The PO had it done a few months after they bought the car.

I'm having my 200 shortblock rebuilt right now for a little over $1600, including a new flexplate.

Unless its something you need NOW. go buy some how to's and idiots guide to... and do it your self. Its going into winter pull it out, figure it out and put it back together before spring. Don't forget to put on a rebuild milled 70's head. And don't forget you can always put up pics of what you broke and some one will know how to fix it.

winter? man, he's in Florida, we don't get winter in Florida... it just gets a little chilly for a while

but i agree with most of what he said, as well as the guy that said drive it till something goes FUBAR, then play around with it, if you study up, learn what can be done, and how far you can go with it before you tear into it, you'll have a much better idea of what to do, and what is possible
but those are just my thoughts

Thanks for the input! My motor finally lost compression and started smoking more than the actors on "Mad Men." I may slowly rebuild it myself as I have another daily driver, but I would sorely miss driving the stang during the winter here in Florida. It's usually the best time to drive without any A/C.
