Need some help, 1964 falcon with a 170 cid, any one know if this engine was a 7 main bearing engine block? With out me taking the pan off. engine is origenal and block id is C3DE as far as I can tell this means it was made in 63 and is a falcon engine block or other ford of that time. I want a 200 and I assume I could us a 200 crank and rebuild this engine. if it has the bottom end I want. I have read that some of the 170 had 7 mains????? Thanks for the help

From what I understand, the 170 did not get the 7 main setup until 1966. I have a 64 Fairlane with the 170 and it's only the four main setup. Sorry I can't be of too much help.

Howdy:

It's a safe bet that your D3 block has a four main bottom. 7 mains 200 blocks didn't appear until the '65 model year.

The only 7 main 170s I'm aware of are D0DE castings that mostly appeared in Mavericks in the early 70's. I have never been able to find definitive data on the use and application of 7 main 170. They are very rare. I keep hoping someone will enlighten us on the issue.

Adios, David

Regarding crank swaps:

A 200 crank in a 170 will give 188 plus any overbore. The four main bearings in an early motor are the same as four of a seven-main set. I suspect it's possible to fit a seven-main crank into a four-main block with very little rework.

The rods may need replacing woth shorter, or custom pistons with lower crown height employed. Could be an interesting exercise!

I have a 1971 Maverick built in November of 1970 with a 170. I will have to check the block casting number tommorow but if I remember correctly it is D0DE and has only 4 mains. I too have never seen a 7 main 170 and really doubt if it exists. I don't think Ford would have designed one late in the game when they knew they were going to discontinue the motor in 1973.

There are 7 main 170s here - only popped 'em out from 66-68 or so. Rare; I've never seen one - most people seemed to option up and get a 200.

I am a little frustrated, I can not find a 200 cid engine block and I know the 7 main bottom end is the engine to build on. Putting all the time in on a 170 doesn't make sense to me. I looked on ebay and found many engines that cant be shipped out to me.

does any one have HP numbers on 200 built with all the trick stuff? Any lines on a motor in Northern Ca. would be helpfull. Thanks all

You may also consider looking on a couple of the Mustang Forums; there are people swapping in eights and often they will let the 200 go for very little. It is worth trying to get the appropriate bellhousing/flywheel/clutch with the motor (or bell and flexplate if auto) - just to be sure of fitment.

Also there are afew members in/around places like SF, so they may chip in with any salvage yard options.

Member "mraley" has posted dyno results with a modified log head and a 2V. If you do a search using keywords mraley and dyno, you'll find results.

Regards, Adam.

bertfam,

You don't say what part of NorCal your from but the 200 engines are fairly plentiful here in the Central Valley. Try your local self serve yard and the local or regional papers classifieds for a start.
