Exhaust gasket material?

Hey everyone,

Does anyone have any suggestions on exhaust material without the metal weave?

When I put in my header the first time (I don't know what brand my header is, I bought it used) I attempted to use a premade exhaust gasket and discovered that the fitment was less that perfect. So, I went to Carquest and bought a sheet of exhaust gasket material and made/fitted the gasket myself. A few weeks later I noticed a ticking that got louder over time. I pulled the header out and discovered that I had developed an exhaust leak at the top of the center siamesed port. I used the exhaust material that has metal woven into it. I am going to use some high-temp epoxy to see if I can make the surface of the header a bit higher at the top of the port where it meets the head. My friend said I should try using an exhaust gasket material that does not have the metal weave in it. He said I will then be able to get a tighter fit and therefore less chance of the exhaust fumes finding a path out again.

Any suggestions on fitment and/or high temp epoxy would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Michael

Sounds like one of the flanges isn't true. Ultra Copper seems to help, I put it in lieu of gasketing on my not-too-straight manifold and it's held so far.

I ran a bead, let it set for 10 min or so, then put the manifold up and ran a couple of bolts up so that it touched. Let it set overnight and torqued her down. Looking good so far but I haven't ran it too far.

i used hi temp rtv silcone on both sides of the gasket- has worked for about 6 months now -

but noticed a few leaks appearing - seems a constant battle to keep it sealed -

but if you have a flat machined exhaust face and manifold flange would be half the battle
