Exhaust port divider??

I've just been reading - with interest about the Clifford - weld in/epoxy exhaust port divider. Just a dumb ass question - if using headers - why cant the exhaust port be divided with a piece of steel welded in the header pipe??? Surely this would save on the cost of the divider and welding/ bonding to the block etc. Obviously the sheet metal divider wouldn't be able to be very long due to the curvature of the header pipe but would still divide the exhaust gases ok. What do you guys think???

cheers

possibly yes;

on the other hand, the cast exhaust divider also shapes the roof of the siamesed exhaust port to match the other ports' size and shape, and might hold up better in heat than a sheetmetal divider.

It's an old trick here for the race classes that used local GM 9-port heads.

Modification to the head ports was not permitted. However, a header system was. Naturally, the protrusion welded to the header formed a part of the header - not the head - so it was legal.
