A mechanic told me that if you remove the exhaust manifold, you'll have have a hell of a time putting it back on because it's warped by the heat.. Is there any truth to that?

when i got my mustang we took off the exaust manifold and it immediatly broke in half (the bolts from cylinders 5 and 6 were missing soo) but if it is bolted on correctly i see no reason why it would warp as the bolts hold it in shape

they actully do spring some when you pull them off, but you should be able to put it back on with little trouble. some people have the head mating surface milled true again, because then it's perfect

When I pulled the stock manifold off of mine it shattered into several large pieces. But that was because I dropped it on the driveway. I got a salvage one from the local junkyard. It had some warp, like curved away from the block. I bolted it down slowly, starting in the middle and working outward -- like in a circular pattern and it worked fine.

When I took mine off I was amazed at how bad the mating surface was. Straight to the trash…

I bought another from a friend, but you can get repops on ebay for about $99. Use a new gasket, new grade 5 bolts or better and star washers. Be sure to add thread locker on the bolts, then torque. I didn't do these things and now need to do it again because it's leaking slightly.

Mine's been off about 20 times it seems... And the mating surface is completely destroyed.

So I coat a gasket with copper RTV on both sides and finger tighten the manifold into place. I let it set for 30-40 minutes and then torque it down. Let it set overnight.

No problems.
