fabbing up an exhaust

Other than taking my mustang to an exhaust shop and having a custom one made. Does anyone have any other ideas about making an exhaust for dual outlet headers. I was thinking... would it be possible to buy a dual exhaust kit from a mustang parts supplier for a stock V8 and use that with the dual outlets... thoughts? Ideas ideas wanted
 
The easiest way to get duals is to use a setup from the eight. You can get complete kits for under $200. You'll have to pay attention to the brake hose to make sure it clears the left side tailpipe. You can sell the H-pipe that normally comes with the kit and just get the muffler shop to do a simple hookup to the headers.
 
Pa1968stang, with a dual outlet header go to a professional muffler shop & go to an x pipe after the headers then to a full dual exhaust system with the mufflers of your choice.
Next time you look at a nextel cup car upside down,what do you see-an x pipe then to dual outlets. these boys know what they are doing.Follow their technology & reep the benefits. let us know what muffler selection you chose? v/r william :D
 
Not trying to be contray- just curious:

Isn't the I-6 just like 2 I-3's back to back - With a dual outlet header, you have 1-2-3 on one section and 4-5-6 on another, with an exhaust pulse every 240 degrees of crank rotation in each group of 3? This assumes a port divider between 3-4.

You have pulses at very regular intervals in each "bank." Does an H-pipe or an X-pipe really help with exhaust scavanging in our sixes? I know of the merits in a V-8 system where the pulses in each bank are irregular due to firing order.

Mikey, i work at a lexus dealership. our gs300 has an inline six. they use an exhaust system similiar to a x pipe, they bring the 2 headpipes into a single secion of exhaust pipe then branch out to dual exhaust. they do it for power & to quiet the exhaust.
I wish someone had the time or resources to do a dyno test.
My local muffler shop which specializes in performance vehicles highly recommends this setup. :D william
 
Don, excellent post, you have nothing to lose using the x pipe setup. the exhaust note will definately be more quiet with the x pipe. your choice?? If bmw & lexus use the setup as stock exhaust what can you lose. they have engineers making $150,000 making the decisions. Its your choice?

Will this X-pipe setup on an I6 work the same with Flowtech Purple hornies glasspacs, or are they just bolted on to the headers. I am trying to find out about glasspacs because a friend of mine said I would want to go with those instead of flowmaster super 40's because they are cheaper and sound just as good. But do they just bolt onto the headers or are they run through piping and added onto the back like mufflers. Any input on that would be appreciated. :wink:
 
they go either way, bolted to the header, or welded to a pipe further down the line

but, if you go with purple hornies, it will sound NOTHING like flowmasters, they are loud, harsh, and can easily become an annoyance in an old car with little to no sound-proofing

just think of straight pipes that aren't as harsh, and you'll have purple hornies
 
Well what would you recommend, going directly onto the headers or welded up in the back to allow for dual exhaust tips. Let me put it this way, which would give me an exhaust that everyone would swear it is a V8 under my hood?
 
the sound should be pretty much the same, just at a different place
i would think that bolting both of them to the header would be a little too much, noise inside would be much worse, carbon monoxide could become a problem, and unless you used some sort of hanger, it would probably put too much stress on the headers

i'd go with full exhaust, but that's just me
