Current setup: Autolite 1100 1bbl, load o matic distributor.
Switching to: Holley/Weber 5200, same dizzy but with Pertronix 1.

When I recently bought the Mustang, the prev. owner had something blocking the spark control valve and had the vacuum hose from the distributor diaphram just hanging....the car actually runs decent.

My question is, when I get the 5200 carb, adapter, and install the Pertronix to my current distributor, do I need to connect the vacuum hose somewhere on the 5200??..Im having trouble with the concept of vacuum advance, etc... I cant quite get the Duraspark II setup yet until I get more money saved up.
If the vacuum hose does need to go to the 5200 Holley Weber, can someone explain what gets connected where, or does anyone have this setup...maybe with some pics ??

Thanks for the help guys, Kelly

If you plan on keeping your Stang I would like to suggest that you invest in a reprint of the Shop Manual. There is a very good description of that Spark circuit.

Basically because of the design the carb and dizzy were married in how they worked. Your best bet is to plug the vacuum port in the dizzy until you can invest in the Dizzy II. As far as I know no one has been successful in adjusting the OEM dizzy to act like a normal dizzy should.

Good luck, Ric.

there is a vacuum port on the H/W but like said the load-o-matic was designed to go with the 1100. even if you upgrade to the DS1 try something. and unless you want to go through alot of hassle with adaption and clearance and throttle linkinge like im going through buy the clifford adapter. worth the money. right now i am still in the process of hooking up the throttle cable and trying to find the right gas pedel to fit a cable. and it doesnt help that i buy top of the line stuff so my throttle cable was like 50 bucks.

Ric, Thanks

Yeah, I've got the shop manual and Falcon Six Handbook... I just wasnt sure if upgrading the carb to the 2bbl and maintaining the original dizzy , but with the pertronix if I should treat the vacuum line any differently.
...And not yet taking delivery of a 5200, I wasnt sure if a vac. line absolutely needed to be hooked up (even though it was meant originally meant for the spark control valve)..So, mount the Holley, and leave the OEM dizzy vac. line plugged is what I'm hearing.

Thanks again Ric

no leave it unplugged. the loadamatic does have centrifical advance so you should be alright but i would actully advance the timeing just a bit maybe 2 degrees.

There has been some discussion on this before. Do a search for those three items Spark Control, Loadomatic ect. If I remember correctly there were some of the guys that had gone both ways. The Loadomatic was either hooked up to manifold, ported or no vacuum advance at all. So it has been done but I think everyone has eventually gone to the Dizzy II once the carb has been upgraded.

Ric.

Howdy all:

There is no centrifugal advance in a Load-A-Matic distributor. It is vacuum only. Please reread the sticky at the top of this fourm. Centrifugal advance was not added until 1967. The Autolite 1100 for that year had no Spark Control Valve, but were down sized to a 1.10" venturi for 150 CFM.

Kelly- If you intend to use the Load-a-Matic distributor with a 5200 2 stage Holley/Weber it will not work as designed. IF you hook the vacuum line to a ported vacuum source and add a few more degrees of initial advance you can achieve a good compromise.

The best solution is to upgrade the distributor to a '67 or later.

Adios, David

I agree with what David said. I would not sink any money into a Pertronix for the Load-a-matic. Been there done that. If you can get a refund, do so and either buy a DS II distributor or a later model points type distributor. If you eventually swap out the carb, a Pertornix unit on the Load-a-matic with a non-stock carb will give you a better spark, but it won't be sending that spark at the proper time. And, even if it is a while before you swap carbs, if the Load-a-matic is original, odds are is that it is not functioning properly because the rubber diaphram has likely deteriorated with age.

Thanks all, I guess I've been intimidated about never installing a distributor before. After numerous searches on acheiving TDC, and how to align the new dizzy, along with the multitude of posts of how to hook up a DII, Im gonna take the plunge and ditch the load-o.
I will pick up a new 80 Fairmont dizzy from the Zone, and get a module, and wiring, etc.
Im sure I will have a few more questions when im ready to put everything in.

Thanks again everyone

I started to put my Pertronix from my Loadamatic into a later model distributor and it bolted up OK. However, upon closer inspection, the plate of the Pertronix sensor interfered with the full range of motion of the vacuum advance rod. I might have been able to grind the needed clearance, had I not slipped and cut one of the wires off flush.

All I did was go to the junk yard and found a 78 or so monarch with a 250 and a Dura 2 ignition. I swooped it right out of there and it's been working just great for almost 5 years now :D 40 bucks
