i have a 93 f150, with a 300, m5od trans 8.8 rear dana 44 frt. i was at work the other day and found a good turbo off a diesel engine in the scrap bin to be thrown away. i asked the senior mechanic if i could take it and he said it was ok. it is a garret turbo and it has a 1.00 a/r compressor on it. from the little research i have done i am thinking i might have too big of a turbo for my six. i want to use my truck to pull my 81 grand prix to the dragstrip when its ready, and it will be a slow trip with 150 horses. could i posibly make this turbo work with an intercooler, turbo cam, and forged pistons. maybe swap fuel injection for a 4bbl intake with a 625cfm carb (vacuum secondaries) that i already have? i am looking for any advice i could get. has anyone ever used a turbo of similar size in a similar application? thank you for any help you can give me.

Need a lot more info than that.

Take both housings off so you can measure the wheels. Measure the small diameter (exducer) and major diameter of each wheel.

There are 50 guys like you everyday on turbomustangs.com that come on and talk about wanting to use some turbo found here or there.

99% of the time it is the wrong size for what you want to do.
It would be best if you just get the right one and be done with it.

i found more numbers on it. on the turbine side i found .84 a/r M1. i have been researching this like crazy the last few days. i think i might just be better off buying the appropriate turbo. but the one i have was free and it probly wouldnt hurt to see if its close enough to use on my 300. i'll measure it like you suggested.

does anyone know of any good turbo books? the only liturature i have is tech manuals for some diesel engines which dont tell you how to pick proper size turbo or tips on plumbing....etc. i have built plenty of naturally aspirated hot rods, but i am new to the wonderful world of turbos, thanks for your help.

What series turbo is it? T03? T04B?

1.00 compressor and 0.84 turbine sounds backasswards to me, no offense but are you sure of which side is which?

the a/r numbers are correct, and i have to do some research to find out what it came off of. i work at an international dealership and it has an international part number on it. i dont think it off a 466/530, because the exaust inlet does not have a square mounting flange. it is split like two d-ports, and the oil in and out are side by side instead of on opposite sides (almost all I-6 diesels turbos have 4 bolt mounting flange ont the exaust inlet, and oil inlet outlet on opposite sides) its probly off a 444 (powerstroke) which on a 444 will see a tops of 3500 rpm and 25-30 psi of boost. i might b able to back track from the part number to find out what type of truck it came off of, power rating, engine type....etc..ill post any info i find.

i confirmed it is off of a 444, so probly was is a tow truck or school bus or something pretty light duty, probly 175-225hp rating. which doesnt say much about its potential on a gas engine the will probly see 6000rpm instead of the 3000-3500rpm diesel it came from.

thank you linc, i found alot of good info. i also have a 302 laying in my garage that is pretty fresh, just needs heads intake and some random stuff. i think a turbo'd V8 would be a little bit overkill in my rusty dented daily driver.

i am thinking about rebuilding my 300 soon, it has 160k and runs great. but the bearings are starting to sing to me on start up. i am considering a mild setup like j pipe off the stock manifold. i can get an intercooler from work for any international truck, and there all huge. probly forged pistons and stock lower end. i probly wont take it over 5000-5500rpm, less than 10psi, pump gas set up. i just want my beloved daily driver to be faster and to shock the shit out of people.

Are you trying to be sarcastic?? I can't tell because you aren't using any emoticons.

If you are serious.....what rock have you been living under??

Maybe you need to spend some time in Texas and get to meet some folks I know. I think running 10's in the 1/4 mile through a stock 302 with a 600 DP is pretty good.

I think I just might, maybe be able to break into the 12's on a 1 bbl carb!!!! (new trans is in the works) I went 98 mph last time at the track, and I haven't even BEGUN to get the tune right yet!!
