FUEL FLOW

I have a 1bbl Carter and a few questions for the experts. What fuel pressure is needed to keep this carb supplied. (PSI?) what happens if you use more PSI? I was reading posts about carb and idle problems and I wondered if I wasnt suffering from vapor lock. My car starts fine and runs fine. but if i stop after a long trip..it takes a minute to stop the rough idle and get back on track. I was out today looking at an insulating sleeve for the steel line and a PSI gage for the fuel line. Any recco's on filters?

i generaly run about 4psi fuel pressure sometimes as much as 6psi depending on the combination. if you still have the carb heat adaptor hooked up that will be a big part of your problem as the engine heat boils the fuel in the carb. i have not disconnected mine yet as i dont have a problem except in hot weather, and even then i drive around the problem for now.

Thats the small tube from the exhaust manifold to the carb with the asbestos-like soft cloth cover? Did you just block the hose?

No thats for the choke to work...he's talking about the heater hose routed through the plate at the base of the carb.

If you are using the stock fuel pump then the 1bbl carter should not require any pressure regulator, it will run fine off the pump feed.

Now I was told that the Holley and Weber 2bbl's are touchier on the PSI and do require a little less pressure to keep the needle from blowing the seat, but the Carter and Autolite 1bbl carbs should run fine off the stock pressure.

This sounds heat or Carb related to me, check the float setting and insulate the fuel line into the carb....

A simple solution that may fix your problem would be a new fuel pump (and filter). If your fuel pump is starting to go out, it wont be pushing fuel through your carb. well/fast enough. This would give you a delay on start up (I had this problem and the fuel filter helped A Lot). Worst case senario, it doesn't fix it all the way, but you have a new reliable fuel pump which you need anyway, and a good fuel pump for that car will run you about $21.

Another idea (just to smooth it out even more on the drive) would be to replace the points with a pertronix breakerless system = NO points, all electronic (~$59). I really think the fuel pump is your problem. Also, if you do decide to put on the pertronix (if you haven't already) you should also but on the Pertronix Flame Thrower Coil to feed it (somewhere around $30 I think, but I can't rememer for sure on the coil).

Thanks all...

Levi...I already have a pertronix system..so thats out. I will install a fuel pressure gage this weekend and I am looking for fuel line insulation if anyone knows what and where to get it. I will also go ahead and reroute the water heater hose as suggested earlier.

If I was convinced that the water was to heat the carb and not cool the intake & carb, I'd reroute my heater hose also. I don't have any starting or idling problems, the car just smells up the garage with gasoline vapors. Sometimes I wonder if a spark wouldn't blow the garage sky high. I'd like to hook up a charcoal canister system to take care of the vapors.
