I've been commuting for the last 9 or so months in my stock 1967 mustang convertbile 200 cu in 6 cyl with a 3.03 3 speed with no problems. The trip is about 20 miles one way and boy does it eat up the gas. But that's not the main problem I'm having at present.
A few days ago I was coming home from school going up the steepest part of the freeway and the engine started cutting out at 3/4 to full throttle. The oil pressure was normal, as was the temp, and I had plenty of fuel. So I pulled over expecting the worst, and I opened the hood to check everything out and it all looked fine. The car started right up again and I was off.
At first I thought the problem might be that the tank wasn't venting well enough, but that was sort of a long shot because why would it happen suddenly. It couldn't be vapor lock because the fuel line runs on the opposite side of the engine as the exhaust manifold, and the weather was fair, 70 or so degrees.
So just today I bought a new fuel filter thinking that may be the problem. I proceded to remove the air cleaner and took a closer look at the carburetor and it seems somewhat dark in there, almost black. I don't think this is normal but I dont know.
Could this be the cause of my engine cutting out? Like I say it only happens on that steep part of the freeway and only at 3/4 to full throttle. I have to slow to about 50 mph just to get across that part of the freeway. Around town and even on flat or down hill freeway driving I never have a problem with it.
I'll put the filter in and see what happens, in the mean time I'd love to hear what anyone has to say about it.
