Fuel pump Electric or Mechincal

All,
This car has been a long road of rebuild, 2 1/2 years and what kicked my but was the fuel pump. The Electric fuel pump left me beside the road on 2 very hot days. This is the question, my engine is built performance...Log modified, yeller roller rockers, Board 60 over and an aggressive cam. So, I was told that the standard pump would handle the new engine. I wired up an electric pump (yes, I did buy a piece of crap pump from Auto Zone) but as I was stuck by the road I bought a standard pump and slapped it on. Guess what it cranked up, stayed running and read about 6 psi. Now I went out and bought a holly Blue fuel pump and regulator. But I ma wondering if it’s really worth all the problems I ran into before by installing? Any thoughts?

You've got a new cam, I'd use the good old mechanical pump. Stops pumping fuel when the motor stops, don't have to worry about messing with regulator. Reputable hot rods use them all the time.

8) since you seem to have solved your problem with the mechanical pump, i say leave well enough alone. the holley pump is a good one to use, if you were building a V8.

Since I like to be different. Go with the electric. :)

The stock mech. pump is good for a 350 cfm carb. I have used mine with a almost similar build to yours for years now. The mech. pump should be running in the 3.5-4 psi range if I remember correctly.

I just recently went to an electric pump. Why? Because my mech. pump left me by the side of the road once also. So, it really doesn't matter to me what people say about electric or mech. pumps. They all go bad once in a while.

The Holley Blue is not going to be a good choice, as they come with a non-return regulator. If you don't have fuel usage within its expected flow rate, the pump will self-damage. I've experienced this twice.

Easiest fix for this, is to install a return style regulator - everything should be fine then. I also suggest you fit a relay or oil pressure cutoff switch to the pump's electrical supply.

I run a mechanical pump with my set up.

Oz250 head, oversized valves, 390CFM 4V carb, Comp Cam. Never had an issue with fuel starvation.
