fuel pump

After doing the valve and ring job i took the car out today for a 12 mile run. After getting home I wanted to check the trans fluid so I left it running, and noticed an odd sound, after checking with my poor mans stethoscope I realized the sound was coming from the fuel pump. I can't imagine what there could be in the pump to make such a sound. My pump has the fuel filter on top and when I put the rod on it the knock sound was definitely coming from it. Any one experience this kind of thing? The sound could have been there all along but before the ring and valve job the engine was quite noisy so I may have just not noticed it.

It's easy enough to unbolt the pump and then start the engine (it'll run on the gas in the carb for a minute or so), confirming that the noise is indeed the pump.

If so, look at the pump arm to see if it's worn or galled, or loose in the housing.

A quick fix could be to remove the pump all togethere and fit a block off plate and an electric fuel pump. Mind you some of them can be noisy as well.
