Funky Knock

Hey everyone.
I recently acquired a 63 ford falcon with 84,000 original miles in outstanding shape. It ran pretty well when I got it, it had been in storage for 14 years. But anyways I put new spark plugs in and it ran exactly the same. Then I changed the oil with 10w-30 and used a ph8a filter from fram. Also at this time I knew that the tranny leaked (fordomatic 2 speed auto) so I pulled the dipstick. There was a rubber looking piece stuck in the hole but I figured it would stay there. I put a funnel in the hole and put about 1/4-1/2 quart of Type FA transmission fluid in. But when I pulled out the funnel the rubber piece was gone. When I started the engine I got a incredible knock the increase with slower engine speeds. I'm not sure if it's the engine or something in the transmission as it gets worse when in gear. Could I have overfilled the transmission? The oil is at the correct level. The engine vibrates terribly and hard enough that it is felt through the car and the exhaust moves around a lot. The noise comes from the rear of the engine bay. Could it be a valve, lifter or something? I don't want this engine to be ruined. Please help me!

You may have overfilled it. As I understand it, you have to put the tranny fluid in while the car is running and in gear. If I'm wrong, let others respond.

And completely warmed up.

You have just joined the falcon frustration club.My falcon is finished and has a knocking fordo, sounds like it will fly apart.I had transmission guys put it on lift and confirm that nothing was hitting. They said noise was coming from torque converter or trans, not engine. However they would not attempt to fix it.I have just installed my second fordomatic and it knocks worse that the original transmission.Changed everything from engine back.I have invested $7000.00 in my car and never got a ride.It can be seen in the picture section of this site.Guess I will start looking for another fordo. They must be a good one for sale somewhere.

I would love to get a C4 if there was one within 300 miles of where I live. They are harder to find around here than the fordo.Scrapyards crush everything.I have put wanted ads in papers and on these falcon sites with no luck.

If the engine is shaking it is probably missfiring on one cylinder. This is changing the rotation speed of the engine enough that some rotating part is slapping back and fourth on its rotary clearance and making a clunk. Determine which cylinder (or cylinders) is missing by pulling the plug wires off one at a time while the motor is running. Sometimes a chunk of carbon (or a spark plug side ground) comes loose in the chamber and sits on top of the piston and hits the head in the quench area and makes terrible sounds or bumps the spark plug gap closed. Something could be holding a valve open such as a bent pushrod, chunk of carbon, or something else. When you find the missing cylinder check the compression on the bad cylinder. Stuck open valve causes no compression. Before taking anything apart look in the bad cylinder with one of those bendable looker insiders with a lite. You might see something that you can fish out or an open valve. These engines have also been known on occasion to crack a piston skirt. The piston will rock quite a bit and this can be checked through the spark plug hole. I dont think that a piece of rubber in the trans will cause the problem. Rubber is soft and there is a screen on the oil pickup.
