Gas filter mystery

Sittin' here in the snowstorm and looking at my favorite vehicles in the garage I ponder the mysteries of life and FSP.

I installed generic clear plastic gas filters just ahead of the fuel pump on two roundbodies ('63 Falcon/'61 Comet) because they both sat awhile. I can eyeball any rust or dirt the filters catch . The Comet had a repalced tank and remained clean but the Falcon (wagon) original tank showed some residue although it diminished after a little use. I replaced the clear filter on the wagon a few times and all is good now.

The mystery is that both filters never fill up. They only have a trickle running through them and always have only a little gas in the bottom when car is off. There is no problem with any part of the fuel system. both cars run fine and have adequate fuel delivery.

I just keep wondeering if anyone has noticed this phenomenon and if there is a simple explanation.

i am going to guess that it is trapped air. If the filter was mounted vertically with the iout let on top, you could get plug flow and it would push the air out. In a horizontal position, flow is going to be along the bottom of the filter, and will displace only the air that it needs to at the given flow rate. A flow rate of a few gallons per hour is just a very small trickle of less than 8 oz per minute. If the system flowed at higher rates, it might displace more of the air.

I have the same thing with mine and have never had any problem with it at all. It tends to fill up when running and sort of drains a bit when not running.
Here is a pic of mine. Again, I've never had any problems with it.

As I watch the snow melt sit and ponder like this, too....what would a new head cost...could I swing it withouth SWMBO (she who must be obeyed) finding out???

Cheers,

I too also Have a clear plastic filter but it is just before my carb. When running it looks like it's almost empty and it eventually fills almost completely full after I shut the engine off. I have been driving it daily for two months with no problems.

I'm running the same thing on my Harley just before the Mikuni carb, the filter is usually half empty, but it runs great and still keeps my rear puckered to the seat.
