I was in my trunk the other day and I had thrown a towel in there...and it landed on my filler tube. When i went move the towel, it was wet with gas.

I tightened the tube clamps. lets see if that helps.

if you have to replace the rubber tube section (I did on mine as the INSIDE was rotted out but looked fine from the outside. got a 6" length of hose from napa for $12. I would say if it is older than 20 years maybe you should replace it anyway as a saftey issue. not to mention having an interior that smells like gas

i will keep an eye on it

i have NO IDEA how old it is....maybe I will replace it anyways. thanks for the advice

I had no obvious leak but I agree the filler tube can become porous over time. Last year I inadvertently tested this with salt water taffy. I had my 67 Mustang convertible at a car show at the beach. While there, we bought some salt water taffy (individually wrapped in wax paper, all in a big plastic bag). The trunk was pretty full of car show detailing stuff so when I threw the bag of candy in there it ended up sitting right next to the filler hose. Two days later when the show was over and we were home, I took the taffy out of the trunk. As my family and I started to eat it, everyone spit it out- it tasted like gasoline!

I have never smelled a fume in the trunk but obviously some were leaching out through the tube (probably as old as the car). I replaced it and used new clamps. Call this the taffy test!

I thought that Taffy test was hilarious! That is exactly what life with crazy old car lovers must be like to many members of out family. Just this morning my SO left for work in the ToiletOdor, I mean Toyota and then called me on the celphone to let me know the garage and her car interior reeked of gas. Turns out the '61 Comet I'm currently working on and took out yesterday for the mid-winter thaw, had a leaky fuel pump and pissed gas all over the floor.
Yeah it was pretty stinky in the garage but that's why I built an unattached garage in the first place.
