gas smell in interior

i'm sure you've had this question on here before, but i cant find a thread on it, so here goes, ok i'm a bit of a n00b so bear with me, there's a strong gas smell in my interior its most noticeable when i just fill up, and recently i noticed that when the car is parked on an incline (has to be a big incline) it'll leak a little gas not anything to be worried about really i mean its a very miniscule (spelling?) amount, so i was wondering what measures i can take to stop this, it doesnt really bother me (the gas smell) but my girlfriend/friends hate it, so yeah any advice would be great, thanks

Have you isolated the source of the leak? No to be alarmist, but I'd worry. If it's in your trunk, then you're drving around in a bomb. Gas fumes are quite explosive especially in closed spaces.

That said, I had a similar symptom once. It turns out that the seam weld holding my gas tank together had a seepage leak. Since the seam is located at the top 1/4 of the tank, it was only apparent when I filled up. I was able to use some epoxy sealer as a bandaid, but the ideal solution is to fix/replace the tank.

Check the seam weld on your tank, as well as your filler neck connection to the tank. Make sure they aren't leaking. Also check the condition of the rubber seal on the gas cap. It might need replacing. If could just be a gas cap seal, but it could be something more sinister.

The rubber hose between the tank and filler neck is one possible culprit, as is the rubber connection to the breather steel tube. Check that breather tube for obstruction (things can and do nest in them!).

I always had a gas smell in my '65 after filling the tank, which always seemed to spill when filled. Turned out that the rubber hose had a nice little hole on the underside, hidden from view. Also, somewere along the line someone replaced the tank with a mustang tank (16 gal) without a vent. So, when I replaced the hose, I drilled a small hole in the filler neck tube & added a vent. No more gas smell. Hope this helps. Take care,
