Gotta pick my exhaust setup

Hey gang. I know the exhaust and muffler topic has been beaten into submission now, but after all I've read, I still haven't really heard a concensus. Is there one?

here's what I've got (or will have shortly  ):
'68 200 with OZ 2502V head/intake
Holley 2300 500CFM
cam, full rollers, etc
Pacemaker dual outs

I need to decide on the pipe size (running duals) and which mufflers. From what I have read, it sounds like 2.25" pipes are the way to go. I'm leaning toward Flowmaster 50's Delta Flow, but i want to hear the latest opinion polls.

I want the sweet, throaty, slightly tinny/hollow, sound that flows are known for however, this is a convertible! I want to be able to enjoy the top down wthout going deaf! But I also want people to have that puzzled look on their faces when I pop the hood!

Many have listed the Dynomax Super Turbos as a good option. I've also seen Walkers mentioned.

So, what is it going to be? Just know, I'm going to be really unhappy if my 6 sounds like a 6 (or worse, a rice burner!).

Thanks all!

I have heard very good things about Spintech mufflers on an I6/ Also, I've heard an I6 w/ Borlas (XR1s, I believe) that sounded great.

Good luck.

FLOWS FLOWS FLOWS FLOWS FLOWS.... I could go on and on all day. Flowmaster is the way to go. I ought to be the Unofficial Flowmaster spokesperson, I have converted sooooo many people to flow-dyism this past month and not a one is sorry!!!! Ive got flowmaster 50's on mine and I love it. My buddy with a 97 GT convertible has them too and its not too loud in the least with the top down (of course he has cats and we dont). My cousin has 40's on his Tacoma and its LOUD, so if you dont want it too loud, go with the 50's. THey provide the nice tin sound that you want and they are loud enough to let people know your not messin around!!!!!!!!!!!! Then, put the top and the windows up and you really wont hear much. I thought that was BS but my cousin (with 40 series) rolled his windows up and it is still LOUD, I roll my windows up and its TOO quiet. Some on this forum dont like em because they have a "drone" to them, I dont have any complaints from me or anyone else I know, but then again, everyone's preferences are different. Let me know what you decide tho!!!!
Matt

Oh, and dont worry about sounding like a 6, nor a ricer!!!!! I was worried too, but after gettin the header and flows put on, my own mechanic of 3-4 years thought i dropped a 351 in it!!!!!! Trust me, no worries, BEST sounding six banger ever, i promise
Matt

If I want that hollow, tinny sound, I'l put a 16qt kitchen pot on my head and bang it with a wooden spoon. :smash: :)

I vote for the quieter, but still beefy sounding Borla's if it were my choice.

Never heard anything about the Spintechs, but I'd love to hear them installed.

Personally, I like the cars that sound strong, but don't need to bellow it to the world. It's like saying "Yeah, I know I got power, but I don't have to prove it to you unless I really want to." It exudes that quiet confidence/swagger that you just _know_ you're good. And it doesn't catch the attention of cops unless I'm really on the gas pedal...

My experience with mufflers is all 8's. I'd like to hear some more 6's, but I'm still planning on Borla's for Jezebel unless I hear something I really fall in love with.

All that said, if it's the tinny you're shooting for, then go with the Flows with 2" or 2.25" pipes... Just not my thing, I guess. Does that mean I'm getting old? I hope not.

Het Matt, if they are as great as you say they are, why haven't you posted a sound file?

Bryce, okefenoke comet had a sound track of some borlas. They almost sounded like a v8. The only problem is the cost of these mufflers, but they sure sounded great. Check out his posts. a brick in the wind was the sound track. william

I have 50's on my '64 F100 and it sounds absolutely amazing!! I think that's what I'll be doing. I can get the Flow 50's for $55/ea. locally. Borlas are just oo much $.

thanks gang.

The Borla's were a bit pricey at 85$ each, but they are worth every penny to me. I'd like to hear the 50's myself if someone would post.

Don

Oh, and I used 2" pipes, smallest Borla had.

My old Pontiac has a 400 cu V-8 engine and I finally crawled under it to see what brand of mufflers were on it because it has some bad resonance at certain rpm's. I looked up the numbers, and it turns out they are Flow Master 40's. As Mikey states, they have a ring to them when you hit them. FlowMaster's web site indicates they may be an earlier version, and that later product numbers apparently have reduced the resonance. I can't speak for that, but I will swap these 40's out at some point. The thing that suprised me was they did not have different sizes for different engiine sizes.

Bryce, i am going to use the hooker super competion headers, also with a 2" pipe from the 2 1/2 dual outlets. I had planed to run the 2 outlets to a single 2 1/2 pipe then to a camaro muffler then to dual 2 1/4 tailpipes. I may check with borla to see if they offer a single 2 1/2 inlet to dual 2 1/4 tailpipes?? I'll enclose a shot of the hooker 6601 headers.

Either way the sound will be great. :D william

Mustang boy, the best price i got was at jet-hot for $500.00.
www.jet-hot.com or 800-432-3379 ask for chris at x110
they were $25.00 cheaper than summit. :D william

Inliner,
The only reason I havnt posted a sound file is the fact that, well, my car has been in and out of the shop so freakin much since I got them done I havnt had time. I should be getting it back soon and when I do, you better believe I will be getting one. Ill prolly use my buddies digi camera and get some short videos with sound clips. His camera take amazingly good sound clips. All Ill need to do is get someone to help me post it!!!
63,
You wont be dissapointed, I promise!!! I cant wait to get my car back now to get a sound file. If anyone doubts why I love Flows so much, all they have to do is hear them in person (on any 200, not just mine). They sound awesome.
Matt

Thanks Simon, now all I need is for my mechanics to HURRY UP... Lets just say its the last time Ill be goin with them...
Matt

I like the Smithy's mufflers, they're very deep and mellow and sound great with splits. I am running Heartthrob Turbo Style Glasspacks on my 250 and I think it sounds fantastic! Everyone thinks it's a V8. It is a bit loud, though - but in a sedan it's just right.

I have not tried dual flows, but I would rather poke my own eyes out with flaming chopsticks than listen to the single Flowmaster on my Mustang anymore. If I ever get any spare time, off it comes, into the junk pile. :x Duals and turbos for me.

Yeah, my cousin and a friend both have single flows, for the trucks they are on, they sound good, but both of them agree that my car sounds a HELL of alot better. They are both a bit annoying at times tho, but I have yet to really be bothered by mine. I am gettin a little pissed cause I still have no word on my car and I want to get some videos goin!!!!!!!!
Matt

Jack, you are so right, a single flowmaster sounds like a dog crapping razor blades. I have a 40 series delta flow & it sounds ok at idle & full throttle, but anywhere in between    william
