hmmm not sure dont know much about motors. i just bought it about off ebay so you might have already seen it. i dont know how to post pics so if someone can give me an email or something i can send a pic to and tell me whet needs to be done that would be great.

Cheers

You've got the head AND manifold, right?

Everything else is pretty available.

yeah i have the head and manifold and the original carb, would this be ok or should i change it to a holley. What about the rest of the stuff like springs and whatever else is there.

cheers

Choose your springs to suit the cam. But wait, there's more.

Make this a realistic choice based on the driving setup of the car. If you're planning to drive it every day, don't get too radical. Crow do some pretty good grinds. They nominate spring sets to suit the cam. If you overspring it, you'll wear out the cam and timing set faster than needed.

If you're planning a 221 or mild 250, I personally think the Stromberg is OK. The rocker arm and shaft assembly is common enough but you might want to spend $600 on the Yella Terra "Street Terra" roller rockers. Please note this requires different pushrods and lifters than the motors came with. Not hard to buy, just different.

Valves can often be found in original sizes, as older stock. Otherwise you can cut down Manley or Milodon valves, or buy the SI Industries US-made ones that require sleeving the valve guides - not a major task.

Rocker cover is standard. There are several water outlets (thermostat housings) that fit. The WO-1 fits and has a small neck for the early radiators. WO-4 also fits and has a bigger outlet for 250 radiators and 302/351 size hoses too. Buy a name brand thermostat (meaning, Canadian or American).

Check your exhaust flange area for erosion. If it's leaky, don't put off fixing. Get it skimmed for about $60. Gasket sets common, and about $30 from memory.

Biggest favour you can do the motor short of a rebuild, is to dial in the cam with a new Rollmaster or JP timing set.

Hope this dealt with a few of your questions!

Cheers, Adam.

Hey Addo, Is the crow chain any good? Ive got the dizzy gear and cam from them and a new stock balancer for street use. Cheers

I've never seen one in the flesh, but the piccies look just like a JP. If the price is right, snag it!

Chain is actually German. Which only leaves us the sprockets. I can't see more than one maker actually producing their own gears, especially when they all look the same - Crow, JP, Rollmaster...

BTW, got a good line on a steel Romac 250 balancer if you want (P/N 0217, I think). Probably half new price. Any takers please note - no profit in it for me; it's a mate's excess parts.

I don't know exactly, and like I said no profit in it for me. The seller's out of Oz until later October.

If you're serious, PM me in the next couple of weeks. If there's sufficient interest, I'll pay him for it and pass it on at actual cost. He's a good mate and I won't wear people stalling or stretching him on payment. It came off a turbo XP wagon that popped a hole in #6 slug. The crank is also available, I think - but it may be stock.

Now... How do we tie all this back to Mr XR's thread? :? (Sorry mate)

All this 2V talk is making me get hard parts  :D

hey guys,

thanks for all the info. Im really looking forward to getting this thig all together to see/feel the power difference. Might look at getting the roller rockers by the time i get around to finishing the other stuff should have enough for the work on the head. Would be good if you were here in Melbourne Addo, would be nice for someone like you who is willing to help work on it. Hopefully ill be able to find someone close by who isnt going to rip me off.

cheers

Is it going on a 221 or 250? 'Cause it'll be pretty lacklustre on an XR 200. The compression ratio will be about 20% on the low side.

I do visit Melbourne as often as possible, but have a "distraction" there  so free time is not really much!

hey,

it is going into a 250 that has had the bottom end rebuilt about a year ago. will there be much noticable change in the power there, it goes through an old three speed manual at the moment but will be looking at getting a single rail 4 speed when the head goes on.

They can be pretty thirsty. Don't overfeed it! You will notice it more as the loud pedal goes further down. It doesn't run out of puff in the same way as a log head. Also, the headers often make it a little quieter!

hey i figured out how to post pics so if you could tell me what i am missing and need to get for her that would be great. i know this is hard from a pic but anything would be great.

Picture's a bit small! Looks like you need a valve cover, oil cap and pushrods. Got a bigger photo?

Hey addo, I bought the 250 head from you a couple of years ago and I am having trouble buying valves. Do you know what sizes will work that I can go and buy here in the states

Do you mean because of the stem size, or the face diameter? Intake or exhaust? Have they been wearing or burning up?

There's two ways to go. You can use a larger "bullet" type liner in bronze or cast iron that has the US size stem bore, or I can try to find some service issue valves locally. They're not so common anymore but it's worth a look. If you went with the US stem size option, you could probably interchange with the SI valves AzCoupe is selling.

From memory, that head already had the larger exhaust valves fitted. I'll see what can be found out for spares, if you give me some more details.

Regards, Adam.
