I have a 170 engine. I am installing air conditioner on it. I got the 2 grove pulley from a 200, which is the harmonic balancer. Will it be ok to put that pulley/balancer on the 170?

Howdy back LD:

Yes, so long as the pulleys line up and don't interfere. that will depend on what year your 170 is and the water pump.

Adios, David

FWIW:
I ran in to a little problem with swapping a '71 170 with a dual groove pulley into a 61 Comet (Roundbody Falcon engine bay dimensions).
The dual belt groove balancer interferes with the '71 fan unless I use the water pump shaft extender from the 71 Mav waterpump which makes it too long and the fan hits the Comet radiator. I had to put the single groove balancer from the '61 and the '61 fan onto the '71 engine to fit into the early Comet .
Also the timing mark on the single groove is on the rear side of the pulley lining up with the marks on the timing gear cover. The dual groove pulley mark is on the front, lining up with the marks on a small bracket which attaches to the timing gear cover.

Hope this info helps

Well back head scratching again. I went and tried the double pulley on the water pump and it hits the pump body. This is going in an Econoline pickup and it had very little room. I have the engine out for rebuild. I think if I go any more forward with the fan, it will hit the radiator. I think I will run single crank pulley with belt going around crank, water pump and a/c compressor. I'll use double pulley on a/c compressor and let a belt go from that second grove and pull the alternator.
The little piece of sheet metal that goes in between of the crankshaft timing gear and timing chain cover, which I assume is to help keep the front seal from leaking. Well the 170 had one, but not the 144 or the 200. I wonder why? Recon someone has forgot to replace it after having it apart?

The early Falcons only had dealer installed or aftermarket Air Conditioning. The dealer installed Air had a bracket that mounted to the right side of the engine. This bracket mounted the compressor and the generator or alternator. All four pulleys (crank, water pump, alternator, and compressor) were driven by a single V belt with the belt tension adjusted by the alternator. The after market Air Conditioning Had a bracket that mounted the compressor to the left side of the engine. This set up required a double water pump pulley and a single pulley that bolted to the harmonic balancer to make it a double pulley. This bracket also had an idler pulley for adjusting belt tension. With the aftermarket set up, you couldn't have power steering. Because it mounted where the power steering pump would go.

I think you have the later model pulleys and AC bracket and that is why you are having these issues. I went through all this with my 65 Ranchero. Trying to install an engine from a 78 Fairmont. Besides having to change the oil pan, basically I had to change everything on the front of the engine. Pulleys, Harmonic Ballancer and brackets had to be from the early engine, I even changed the timing chain cover.

I have both AC brakets. Dealer and aftermarket. I am going to keep the dealer bracket for my next project. I will sell the aftermarket bracket that mounts on the left side of the engine. I also have the pulleys for it, the idler pulley bearing is a little rough, but they are still availible from NAPA.
