Harmonic balancer

I have a 1978 200 that my son(last year) put in a Ranger. Never got it running. The motor ran before he installed it. Before he installed it he put a harmonic balancer from a 170 on it because it was for a single pully, clearance problems at radiator.I didn't know if there was a difference in a 170 and 200 harmonic balancer. It ran once full throdle to keep it running. Tried lots of things at no go.I don't want to spend $120 on a harmonic balaner if I don't have to. Thanks for any imput need to get it out of the garge to work on my Ranchero!

8) since the ford small six is internally balanced, there is no issue using the 170 balancer on the 200.

Thank you, now on to new ideas on why it won't run.

8) as you know an engine needs three things to run, an ignitable fuel mixture, compression and a properly timed spark. if you are running a point type ignition check the points themselves for proper operation, check for vacuum leaks, check to make sure you have fuel to the carb, etc. also make sure your ignition timing is on the money. another thing to check is that you dont have the valve lash set too tight, assuming you have adjustable rocker arms.

We took the duaspark carb dist off of a running car.Used a gallon gas can below the fuel pump with a line in it.Never opened the motor. took the timing cover off to check the timing chain.Ajusted timing ( we thought) .Unhooked the wiring and hot wire it.
Im still thinking maybe when my son changed the harmonic balancer. Some how it slipped i n the rubber? Thanks again Ken N.

8) its possible that the balancer slipped. what you can do is try playing with the timing while you go to start the engine. start by advancing the timing, if that doesnt work go the other way.
