head gasket thickness

Hi all

When adding the steel shim head gasket to your engine do you have to grind any material out of it. mine hangs in the bore of the cylinder and would have to be removed? is this normal (i did a 030 overbore to the motor) the mechanic said we would have to remove alot of the crush area of the steel head gasket. is this ok or am i just looking at blown head gaskets down the road.

do you know who makes a thinner one then the felpro gasket?

will it make a noticable difference between the 2

thanks
John

John,

You've probably got a 144/170 (3.5" bore) head gasket - that's why the bore diameter is too small. You'll need a 200/250 (3.68" bore) head gasket.

NO, you can NOT grind the crush ring off the gasket. It will blow out almost immediately.

Sorry to be the purveyor of bad news, but IMHO your best bet is to get a 200 head gasket even if it is thicker.

Good Luck

Hi all

i just talked to the mechanic and he said he would have to grind away about 50 % of the crush area

we decided to go with your suggestion and use the fel pro gasket.

so anybody want a steel shim gasket it is for sale

thanks

John

Howdy John:

NAPA carries the Victor brand head gasket which is .010" thinner then a FelPro.
