my head was milled too much and i need a new one I have a 69 or 67 block and am wondering what car would be best to pull it out of and also how much should I mill if I go with the late 70's early 80's head. also what would I have to do to a mid 70's maveric head to make it work on my engine. thanks all resposes greatly appriciated

Howdy Pepsi:

More info please! What was "Too much?"

What is your compression goal?

Have you read the stickies at the top of this Forum?

Basically, when upgrading from an early, small (52cc) chamber head and steel shim (.025") head gasket to a Later head (62cc) and composite head gasket (.038 - .050"), and you want to maintain, at least, stock compression, you will need to mill the head, or deck the block enough to compensate for the differences.

It will depend on comparing what you have to what you want. Then machine to achieve your goal.

well im not sure how much was taken off this time but i saw machine marks on the head which means the job was done before. I took it in and had it machined flat to get the warp out of it and then i put a composite gasket on and retorqued the head. pumped upthe oil started up the car and now it has 210 compression in cylinders 1 and 5 120 in 2 and 4 170 in 6 and O in 3 so what i figure is the valves are hanging open on that cylinder. i tapped them with a hammer to try and un stick them still no compression. I poured oil down the cylinder to see if it was a broken ring. still no compression. All i can figure on doing is put washers under the rocker assembley to shim the hight but im not sure if that will fix the problem and also I wonder im my engine can even support 210 compression. if not I wonder which head to replace it with I have a 67 block and so i need to know what car to pull it out of with minimal mods because im trying to keep costs down If i get a D8 what would i have to mill it to in thousands to use a composite gasket or if i get a head from a mid seventies maverick how much would i mill the head to use a composite gasket and achieve stock compression im using a felpro gasket One more question how would i CC the chambers and what cc would i look for to achieve stock compression with a felpro gasket

Mustang Geezer's website has a good "how-to" for CC'ing the head.

Try the following on your zero cylinder: Loosen the rocker shaft evenly, and reassemble with the exhaust pushrod removed for that cylinder. Test compression in the suspect hole. If still zero, loosen the rocker shaft again and remove the intake pushrod also. Test again. You should see gauge fluctuation but not a high pressure reading - if no gauge movement , then it is a bore sealing issue.

Heads have machine marks on the gasket face from factory, too. Chamber volumes will tell you a lot.

Regards, Adam.
