Hey guys, I'm finally going to be home some for the summer and able to work on the 'Stang again! First project.... get her running right!

Here's my current setup.

200 six
Clifford dual outlet headers
2" duals with turbo mufflers and Hpipe
Load-0-matic dizzy with pertronix, coil, and wires
Carter YF
8" rear with 3.50:1 gears and the crappy 2.77 3spd

And here's the problem... acceleration is really sluggish off the line and gas mileage is pathetic. 2nd and 3rd gear pull fairly hard and she runs fine on the highway. BUT, I only get 15mpg in town or on the highway..... and I think thats uncorrected for my speedometer so it could be 25% lower!

Its been awhile since I did the tuning but it seem I dialed in 5* advance over stock specs. I tuned the carb to give max vacuum at idle and have the dizzy vacuum port connected to the only port on the carb.

I plan on replacing the belt driven fan with an electric to help both power and efficiency but also to cut down noise some. Between that fan spinning full RPM and the exhaust long 75mph cruises are nearly deafening!

I'll probably replace the YF with a 5200 by the end of the summer, but in the meantime I need to see if I can squeeze out some better mileage.

So, suggestions guys?

I'd think of going to a DuraSpark II dizy and get the benifit of a mechanical as well as vacuum advance. Just about everyone that has switched says that it's one of the best and cheapest upgrades that you can do.

yeah, i went with the Duraspark 2 setup,it runs alot better! but at the same time i put a MSD 6A ignition box, MSD Blaster SS coil, MSD wires, electric fan, T-5 tranny, and entire rear suspension.

before all that i was getting about 18 mpg on the highway, now i'm gettin between 23 and 25 on the highway (alot of that is probaly the tranny)

next up is a clifford dual out header with 2" exhaust into glasspacks then a holley 2300. the exhaust is in the next month since i've already got everything ordered, don't know how far away the carb is

I had considered the DSII swap but really hate to be out the cost of a DSII AND a Pertronix!

But, correct me if I'm wrong isn't the DS advantage at higher RPM's where the load-o-matic isnt getting enough vacuum? How would this help off the line hesitation?

Howdy Dieseler and All:

A big part of your mileage and running problem is the incompatibility of the Carter YF (No Spark Control Valve in the carb to modify the vacuum signal to the Distributor) with the Load-A-Matic distributor.

Upgradeing to a Non-Load-A-Matic distributor should be your priority. You could move up to a '68 - '71 point type distributor. These years will have both centrifugal and vacuum advance, and you should be able to adapt your Petronix to it.

Changing to a H/W 5200 will not solve your mileage problems until you deal with the distributor incompatibility.

The DS II has a significant advantage over all earlier distributor in several ways. You will notice quicker starting, a better idle, smoother power, better economy, and probably others.

More information on what year/casting engine your working with would be helpful. What year and engine size is your YF from?

Adios, David

You'll have to forgive me not having specifics. Unfortunetly the car is 300mi away and I won't see her again until the begining of June.

I do know it's a 200ci w/6bolt bellhouse and 2bolt starter. I believe the block is a '66, possibly the head as well. It has the dinky 1.5" opening,

I have a later model head I need to go get back from my friends house. I had planned on putting the later head on until I saw those nice aluminum offerings from down south!

One other option is to get a 68 or later points distributor and reuse the Pertronix. that gets you the mechanical advance and you save a couple of bucks on the electronic ignition. It will work better with the YF, too.
