I just got a 1965 mustang convertible with a bone stock fresh rebuilt 200 / 3 speed. This car would be perfect for a turbo!! Here is my thing; I don't want to spend a lot of money on expensive kits, and I have never set up or plumbed a turbo. I would like to use parts form salvage cars, sicne they are plentiful aorund me. I don't have a lot of money, but I can fabricate about anything. Please help me by answering my questions.

1) What car am I looking for that has a turbo that would be sufficient for the 200? I know where I can have the complete setup off of a 91 Probe GT. Is this enough power? What am I looking for?

2) How do I plumb the exhaust form the manifold (stock or other) through the turbo? What size pipes do I need to use?

3) What steps do I need to take to bump up the fuel delivery to the motor? Is there an additional supply that has to kick in when the turbo does? Am I safe to assume the stock one barrel is not enough? Would a ford autolite 2 barrel (adapter plate) work? What about the stock fuel pump?

4) Do I need to change the camshaft? What am I looking for?

5) How do I supply oil to the turbo after it is mounted? Will the stock oil pump be enough? How do I feed it from the motor?

6) Is there a certain place I have to mount the turbo, as long as the axis is paralllel?

ANything you guys could help me with would be greatly appreciated. Pictures, advice, how to build pipes, anything. thanks. natejones75@hotmail.com

1: that turbo will be enough for a mild street engine. if you want more then find a turbo from an svo mustang, or tbird turbo coupe.

2: a J pipe works nicely.

3: that depends on what fuel system you use, and whether you use a draw through or blow through system. if you use efi, then you need to select the correct map sensor, a 2 bar sensor works great for the street. if you stick with a carb then i suggest a draw through system. that way you dont have to deal with a boost referenced fuel pump or sealing the carb throttle shafts. linkage on the other hand will need fabrication.

4: you dont need to change the cam unless you want to make some seriouis power, or you want to change the power curve. for a first timer stick with the stock cam.

5: the stock oil pump will supply all the oil the turbo needs. you can tap into the oil pressure sending unit line to supply oil to the turbo, use a T fitting. keep the turbo above the oil pan as if you try to run the oil drain up hill you will have problems keeping the turbo bearing properly oiled. runt he drain line into the pan.

6: see #5

i recomend you get hugh mcinnes book turbochargers published by hp books at you local bookseller. it contains a ton of good information.

Good info except the part about doing a draw-through. Thats about the WORST possible way to run a turbo system. i would rather haev the turbo outlet POINTING at my carb than to have it draw through.

Go re-read that book, and also read Maximum Boost by Corky Bell.

Just my $0.02

8) in my opinion, draw through works well in a carbed application, and blow through works best in an fuel injected system. when the compressor wheel is turning, you get a good fuel mixture.

Thanks guys for all the info, but I have some follow up questions and keep in mind that I am totally new to turbos
1) I actually know where there is a turbo coupe tbird (with a 5 speed, amybe I should get that too) . Anyway, what, besides the turbo itself, parts should I get off of this donor car?
2) I understand about feeding the turbo oil from the sending unit local. Where do I let the oil drain back into the motor at? I am assuming that there is an inlet and outlet oil line on the turbo.
3) I am unfamiliar wiht a "j pipe". Can these be bought cheap? SOmeone got a pic, maybe I can make one.
4) I am sticking with the carb. Should I ditch the ford one barrel for a adapter plate and two barrel autolite? Would this be enough? What kind of mods need to be made?
5) I have no idea what you mean by "draw through" and "blow through" system. Enlighten me.

1: grab the turbo fittings, the exhaust manifold, you can cut the mount off and have it welded to your exhaust manifold if you like.

2: run the drain tube to the oil pan above the oil level.

3: a J pipe is just that. a section of exhaust pipe shaped like a J that bolts to the exhaust manifold and the turbo. it is used for mounting the turbo.

4: ditch the one bbl carb as it wont provide enough airflow. a 2bbl carb will work well. as for what mods are needed, that depends on your system. jetting will need to be changed to allow more fuel flow, if you run a blow through system the throttle shafts need to be sealed in some way, adn you need to use a nytrofil float to prevent the float being crushed, and a boost referenced fuel pump to over come the boost pressure in the float bowl. for a draw through system, you need the jetting changes, and linkage changes.

5: a draw through system means the turbo is between the carb or throttle body, and a blow through system is where the turbo is before the throttle body.
