Hey 6t Falcon - tried the 30-degree valves?

For years I have built and raced Pontiac v8 in a wide range of drag racing vehicles. Back in the 80's & early 90's I had some of the quickest ones here in Indiana. Pontiac found out thru years of research that the 30 degree seat on the intake was the hot ticket for low-mid lift camshafts like most all of the engines had.
The exhaust was another matter. The tighter 45 degree seat closed tighter with less valve spring pressure, allowing the heat to transfer into the seat quicker. This leads to better seat & valve life in both racing and streat use.
My best firend of 32 years just pulled his 455 Pontiac engine appart
that is in his dragster. It has 1740 passes on it and was last inspected in 1999. The valves (Ferrara pro-flow) looked like new. We bought them when I FIRST built the engine in 1987! They have over 18, 000 passes on them.
Steve figures it may be time to get a new set, just to be safe.
Just my 2 cents.

A couple of snaps I took this morning. Off a 2V head. D&D, if they suit your purposes for illustrations, copy away!

Howdy All:

Thanks Addo. Space is getting to be a premium as the FPH is now at 100 pages and still growing. And we have yet to make up our minds as to the overall value of the 30 degree seat, as opposed to 1.75" intakes with a 30 degree backcut and 1.50" exhaust with as much unshrouding as the cylinder bores will allow. Time and experience will be the test.

We're thinking that the small bore in our engine may lessen the low flow advantage of the 30 degree seats. Unlike Pontiac or SBC V8s. What do you think? We'll try to set up a flow bench comparison putting a 1.75" intake valve in a 1.69" head with a 30 degree seat and compare to a 1.75" intake at 45 degrees with a 30 degree back cut. Of course, flow benches don't make Horsepower. Real life testing will have to determine long term seal quality.

Thanks again for your offer. You'll get credit if we use them.

Adios, David

Big torque? Is that you Bruce? I was going to add a link to the SS forum where you were also talking about this.

And if it is you....why you lookin' at a ford site?
Somebody want a superstock ford 6?

Sorry not who you are thinking of. Got the name from friends when
I use to break drive train parts running long stroke Pontiac engines.
Have have been a hugh fan of Ford 240 & 300 sixes for years.
Use to own a 66 Ford F250 with a 300 six that was my drag car
tow vehicle. Pontiac dosn't make a truck so I went with the
BEST one out there!
Don't own either any longer but miss the 66 Ford F250 bad.
Don't care for Pontiacs any longer since GM screwed them up
and care LESS for the Chevy big blocks I use to race.

AHH! ok, thought it was Bruce Fulper from rock&roll engineering. He's a Pontiac guru who runs a 9sec SuperStock poncho.
