For years I have built and raced Pontiac v8 in a wide range of drag racing vehicles. Back in the 80's & early 90's I had some of the quickest ones here in Indiana. Pontiac found out thru years of research that the 30 degree seat on the intake was the hot ticket for low-mid lift camshafts like most all of the engines had.
The exhaust was another matter. The tighter 45 degree seat closed tighter with less valve spring pressure, allowing the heat to transfer into the seat quicker. This leads to better seat & valve life in both racing and streat use.
My best firend of 32 years just pulled his 455 Pontiac engine appart
that is in his dragster. It has 1740 passes on it and was last inspected in 1999. The valves (Ferrara pro-flow) looked like new. We bought them when I FIRST built the engine in 1987! They have over 18, 000 passes on them.
Steve figures it may be time to get a new set, just to be safe.
Just my 2 cents.
