holley 5200 selection question

I have recently discovered that my 66 mustang 200 six CA smog equipped has the "wrong" Autolite 1100 SCV carb in it. The smog distribution is a Non loadomatic distributor. So, making plans for an upgrade.

I plan to upgrade the the DSII distributor.

An easy bolt on choice would be to trade carbs with Pony (they were very helpful, by the way) and keep the present dizzy, all is stock. The car is a very nice stock convertible. Because we are in MN, it really is unique, and I want to try and keep the smog equipment.

The questions:
Will the stock non-loado distributor work well with the DSII? Would I take the vacuum off the carb port, or the intake?

I'm thinking of going to the 5200 Holley Weber, adaptor plate, throttle cable linkage. I see that ebay has remanufactured units from 1979-1981 ford six engines for a reasonable price. Will the 5200's from these later model years be a good mate on my '66 six with the DSII? Where to take the vacuum line on this setup?

If the later model year 5200's are not a good mate, what years should I look for?

Has anyone modified the stock snorkel style air cleaner to mate with the 5200 carb?

thanks.

While I can't answer the technical questions you pose, I can tell you the Tom Langdon at Langdon's Stovebolt (google them) can hook you up with the 5200 carb and accessories. He just sold me a new one for $85 and has reman ones for $65.

The DSII will replace the loadomatic. Your carb may or may not have a venturi vacuum port to hook the DSII vacuum advance to. The Holley Webber 5200 does have a venturi vacuum port and works excellent with a DSII. You will most likely need to rejet the Weber. I've done this with my ranchero. I got the dist and carb at a wrecking yard and rebuilt/rejetted the carb myself. The 5200 was a Pinto carb and was never used on a six so shopping by application is going to confuse some folks. Why do you want to keep the smog stuff on it. An upgrade will run better, more efficentley, and cleaner.

I'm also starting to look for a DS II system. What should I expect to pay for one from a wrecking yard if I can find one?

Got mine from Ecology it was around $60 for everything....Distributor, module, coil, wiring harness, cap, rotor, plug wires, and hold down. When buying "make it run" parts always try to get them from a wrecked car. You never know why a straight car is in a wrecking yard, but a wrecked one was probably running at the time of its demise.

K.....I have an opinion on Pony that I won't post online. EM me and I can tell you more.

My suggestion is to rebuild your 1100 your self or wait for the newer Pony vortec 1100...that Mike will be testing fair and square.

Short of that, you are not doing yourself/the car a favor by staying with the 1100 if you aren't keeping the whole car concours. The upgrade to the 5200 is good for the 200 and in many cases better if you have any kind of mild upgrades to the engine. Going to the DSII is a bigger upgrade than most think. You are getting a larger kernal of flame and gapping the plugs bigger. Better combustion and performance, so why not take advantage of the carb that can deliver it!

good advice everyone, and thanks. I've stuck with the smog stuff probably because it's fun to talk about up here in MN at the local cruise ins and etc. It's unique for the year, we midwesterners didn't know what smog was in those days! Goes good with the original black plate, too.

But, I've read too many good posts on driveability improvement from the DSII and 5200 combo not to change. Driveability is more important to me than keeping the smog stuff. If I can get driveability and keep the smog I will, otherwise it will have to go.

Any opinions on which is the better 2v adaptor for the 5200? Does stovebolt have throttle linkage cable and other neccesities as well? I'm sure willing to pay Stovebolt for one ready to go for my application versus the junkyard carb. I may grab another from the yard just to see if I can actually rebuild one of them.

Good advice on looking for the DSII stuff, would never have thought to look for a wrecked car, probably would have gravitated to the straight one. Trial and error is more fun with lots of good advice!

which adaptor plate works the best with the 5200, assuming I want to mount the adaptor to the log and have the carb lined up correctly, fuel bowl in front? What linkage kit would be suggested in a '66 mustang with the 200 six?
