Hooray! Engine is Out!

Well after a few snags (cherry picker out of fluid), I finally pulled my first engine. Here on base they don't let us work on our cars, so I had to do it in the dark. Had some help from my dad over the phone and all the help i could ask for from my friends who keep saying "call me if you need help", and then they are too busy (oh well). Thankfully everything went smoothly and I can finally start cleaning up the engine compartment. Any hints or tips about keeping things neat and tidy in there?

congrats man... Id start my spraying it out with simple green let it sit on there for bout 10 mins. Get a high presser washer spray it all out. Get ur self a nice wire wheel on a grinder and clean up all the loose paint and what not. Spray it with an expoxy filler primer (to remove any minor inperfections. Then spray it with ur choice of color. use a more of a hardener in ur paint mix and when u buy the paint ahave them add SRI to it so that any oil or gas or rocks that come in contact with it wont chip it or cause it to peel, and ur on you way my friend to having a nice motor compartment. Well, on my '66 I took a variety of simple wire brushes for a drill and put them in an extension bar (about $4 at the local hardware store) and slipped a piece of 3/8" copper tubing over it (with grease on the extension for lube) for a handle and went at it. I put the brushes directly into the drill for greater control around wiring and such. i did remove anything I could without wrecking anything (like the plastic clips that hold the wiring harness in). Battery box came out, radiator, starter relay, accelerator linkage etc came out. Washed it really well using a variety of cleaning brushes, wiped the whole thing with acetone and painted.

I took all the parts that are supposed to be natural metal finish and after a thorough wire brushing or media balsting, painted them with clear acrylic to keep them looking good (no rusting after 9 months now). I cleared the alternator, starter, vacuum lines, Zbar, bolts, timing cover, distributor etc.

Looks real good in there.
