i want to "change the front springs" in my xd

how the hell do i do that without usiing the method in the service manual.

Note by " change" i mean chop.

can i just "change" them while there in there??

hey geoge , were you located??? must race when i get the piece of shit on road

What's the manual's method you're referring to? I bought a coil spring compressor for $109, shortened the threads and it goes great.

Half a turn drops about 16mm.

You will need a spring compressor, a cheap one may not even last one job as they are normally very strong springs and the cheap compressors are normally very cheap.

Good spring compressors for X series Aussie Falcons (suits lots of mustangs etc too) either bolts to the spring saddle or has discs that lock into the spring and is wound up from the top of the spring tower.

I have a home made one that bolts into the spring saddle where the shock absorber is bolted.
Basically you remove the shocks (1/2" nuts), remove top shock mount, bolt the spring compressor in, remove saddle bolt nuts (9/16" or 14mm) on the top control arm, wind the spring up, unbolt the top control arm (nuts are in engine bay, normally 11/16 or 17mm) and either remove (ball joint will need to be unbolted) or swing to the side, unwind the spring compressor to remove the spring. Do it in reverse to replace.

Does this help?

Basically there is not many safe ways of removing springs to shorten.

I did once cut springs in the car with a oxy, dangerous and not recommended. Better off cutting the springs with a grinder as the spring wont loose as much tempering as with the heat from a oxy cutter.

Forgot to mention I always tie the spring loosely to the upper arm with a few loops of baling wire. If anything fails, it will not go far!

BTW, my (infernal type) T&E compressor wasn't a cheapie as such. It's US made and warranted, but was too long for the Fords. The Ford factory unit P/N 5310-D was over $410.

Regards, Adam.

yes yes compressor.....

looks like i'll be doin it the good old fashioned wog way

angle grinder

wish me luck its only what 3 inch from each coil

baling wire?!!!!!! enter it in a feral show.

ps out of prefernece id never muck around with chopping springs, in my opinion its worth your while waiting for a bit and getting a set of springs with the specific ride height, they are not too dear, like im pretty sure max for a set of lovells $150, ask teh ex marlows/supercheap person (TaraHymen)

3 inches - you mean chop or drop? Try 1½ coil turns to begin with, for a 3" drop You'll probably need to go a little more again. While you're fooling around for the afternoon, leave off the outer covers and shocks. When it looks right, put them back on and test drive.

Measure a reference point on both sides from the "knob" at the balljoint on the upper arm, to the underside of the body frame above. That way, the drop can be determined easily.

Remember to share your results with us by measurement or photos.

Cheers, Adam.

i remember when I took mine out it didnt seem to hard, details are hazy tho :)

i grabbed a s/h set of kings springs for $ 45 , ended up being around ~ 2.5 in lower and i wouldnt want to go much further ... alread has some scrapage issues if its got a few passengers and comes across a enthusiastic speed hump !

its that time of year again and im stuck into exams . will do proper writeup as i progress after exams.

again how the hell do i get pics onto the site.
do i need to upload them elsewhere then set up linnks???

yehhh last semester baby yeh

Easiest way to get pics up is sign with HPPhoto. Free and non-spam. Then they have a "create link" option on the photos and you're set.

Exams? I had my last one yesterday!!! Now no excuses for not knowing what to do. :P
