I am looking at building a Hamb rail and need to know how much HP I can get out of a 223 without going broke. I'd bore it 60over and stroke it to 3.75 by offset griding the crank. Run aftermarket rods and a set of custom pistons to get the 240CID that combo would make. With a 3 carb intake , custom header,458 lift 270 dur regrind cam or custom cam. I'd run bigger intake and exh. valves and deck both the engine block and head to raise compresson to 10 to 1. Can this combo make a Horse a CID or 240HP?

Although those things were done in the past(prior 240/300), you will be hammering pretty hard on those four main bearings. The 223 is a very reliable engine(I run one - stock), but when you start doing things that you are thinking about, you are going to be putting a severe overload on a lot of components that were not made to handle those stresses. Just food for thought.

Thanks Fred. I know the 223 and 262 only have 4 mains. But one of the things I'll do is run ARP studs for extra stength and the whole assamble will be Balanced too. Last I'll try and keep the RPM under 5000. If I can gear the car and cam it to make all the Hp and Tq. down low and limit the RPm to 4,500 or less that would be even better. Right now it's just a paper engine.

Good but old article in Hot Rod magazine for April, 1954 for sale on E-bay under straight six, item number 260193481724. Nice picture on the front cover. 262 engines have forged cranks if I remember right. One that I overhauled years ago did. Gear drive cam too. There is also a Mallory distributor on E-bay now that the seller says is for a 223. Maybe a gear change could get you a centrifugal advance distributor.
