How tight should a timing chain be? I-200

I posted earlier today regarding my '64 comet 404 wagon with the I-200.
I dropped the pan and the pick up tube was clean as a whistle. I believe the fuel pump is functional as I turned the shaft and oil spurted out with pressure. I did however notice the timing chain had 3/4" slop in it. I could push it inward and hit something. I could also wiggle it side to side slightly. I think this could be the slapping/clanking sound. But would it cause the motor to run rough after afew minutes?

Thanks.

A good way to check for slack in the chain is to turn the crank slowly back and forth to see how far it turns until the cam moves. A good chain you shouldn't have any slack but as for wear tolerances I don't have a clue.

½" overall slop with the opposing side tensioned, is the wear limit. The dual roller set is dear, but their chain can be had as a service item for much less - if you need it in years to come. 9 keyways and billeted gears make it easy to get the installation how you want.
