How to tell what year and size

Hey guys,
The names Ronny, 14 years old putting together a 67 mustang. When i got the car, it came with a 200ci, which i pulled and bought another motor. The reason i pulled the original motor is because of a rear main seal leak, which i am in the process of fixing. During that time i purchased another motor. The guy i bought my other motor from said he had it rebuilt, but didn't know what year it was or if it was a 170 or a 200. I need to find a way to tell what year it is and what size it is(170, or 200). I would like to not have to rip the engine apart, since it is rebuilt. Any help on this problem would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your time guys,
Ronny

Check the casting code on the exhaust side of the block. It should begin with a letter, followed by a number. The letter is the decade, C=60s, D=70s, E=80s; the number is the year in the decade. A casting code C6 would be a block designed in 1966.

To tell the difference between a 200 and 170 is to count the number of freeze plugs on the exhaust side of the block. Five freeze plugs would be a 200, three freeze plugs would be a 170.

Read this: http://www.classicinlines.com/Ident.asp and this http://www.classicinlines.com/SmallSixS ... #SSgeneral

Hope this helps.

Dan also listed one of the great on-line resources for knowledge on these motors. For littrature I would suggest the Ford Falcon six cylinder Performance Handbook (but I'm a 'old fart' n we like the hard copy). With these 2 resources you can go very far.
WELCOME to the site/forum! Keep in touch, let us know how it goes, any Qs. I didn't say it but this here lill spot is tops - we both were lucky to find it. Saved me LOTS of money and time. Folks on the above named 2 resources stop by here some too...
:D

Howdy Ronny:

And welcome to The Forum. Tell us more about your Mustang- What trans? What your plans are? What condition is it in? Etc.....

Check the casting code on both the block and the cylinder head. The head casting is on top of the log, behind the carb mount.

Check out this site. I think you'll find it usefull.

Adios, David

Thanks for the help guys. I now know that the motor is a 1966 200ci. My plans are to rebuild the original motor. add a Clifford dual outlet header going to flomasters. The trans sadly is a automatic :( but i am in search of a 3 speed because we all know there's nothing like a stick. :) The car overall is pretty decent. I know for sure i have to replace the cowl, which i know is a huge job. I have been buying stuff for this car since i first got it back in 2008. I bought two quarter panel skins, a trunk, floor pans, fenders, a hood with the turn signal in it, and seat pans for when i change the floors. Thats all about my plans and about my baby. Ill keep you guys updated, and i hope i can get it running this spring/summer so i could take it to car shows.
Thanks for your help again
Ronny

You can't post a picture directly onto the forum (except for your avatar and signature). You have to place the photos on a website like http://www.photobucket.com , then place the link to that photo. See this post viewtopic.php?f=47&t=48863 for rules.

As for you switching to a standard, you may want to consider a T-5 instead of just a 3spd. If you go the inexpensive route, the only difference in parts (besides the transmission) would be the crossmember, clutch disc, and bellhousing adapter. If you have a C4, you may even be able to use the driveshaft/transmission yoke since the overall installed length of the C4 and T-5 is the same. Someone else on the forum who has done this exact swap would be able to tell you exactly what needs to be done.

I recommend the 4Cyl T-5 over the V8 for several reasons:
1. The 4cyl T-5 is cheaper to purchase than the V8; and
2. The first gear is lower in the 4cyl (3.97) than in the V8 (3.35) and will give you better off-line acceleration.
3. The 4cyl T-5 will handle all the torque from a NA 200, 245ft lb, so unless you are boosting it, or switching to a 250cid, why pay more.

As for the header, you may want to consider Mike's stainless steel header here http://www.classicinlines.com/products.asp?cat=53 . Almost the same price, you won't have to worry about it rusting, and you help support the owner of this forum.

Hope this helps.

hey guys, first off happy Easter! Now, its about the motor again, when i bought it it had came with a generator, i didn't think they used generators in 66 but im 14 i could be wrong. If you think it could be a different year or came from a different car can you please help me out its almost ready to try and start it up again.
Thanks for your time

Happy Easter! You are correct as 1965 was first year of the Alternators so most likely some changed it and swaped in a 64 or the early parts. Usally people go from gen.'s to alt. but they may have had some good used parts laying around. As was said you need the block numbers and date code to know on the engine. Good Luck!

bubba22349:The numbers i found on the side of the block are:c6de, 6015b, fomoco 6a5
If you can tell me what these mean i would greatly appreciate it
Thanks Ronny

Hi Ronny,

Your numbers C6DE 6015B 6A5

This breaks down as a 1966 Falcon engine block (second revision of the design) it was cast on Jan. 5, 1966

How many freeze plugs on the side of the block? A 200 has 5 and a 170 has 3

Check through echo1955 post on his rebuild lots of good pictures should help you ID if you have a 200

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=63640

What is the Vin code number this will tell you also if its the org. engine size the door tag has codes too for trans, eng. and axle, trim, build date DSO etc I can decode all these for you!

the motor didn't come in the car i purchased it from a friend, its currently in a 67 mustang which i am trying to get running. Looks like its a 200ci from a 66 falcon though
