How to test a used turbo

Is there anyway to test one of these things without actually hooking it up? I assume you can rule out the really bad ones right away by checking the play in the bearings but what, if any, other types of tests can be done?

I have been looking at a drawthrough (complete minus carb) on a early 80's Buick 3.8L, but I know it will be at least a couple months before I get time to put it on anything, and by then I will be moved and there will be no returns..
