Ok, so heres the deal.

Just got the car back, completely re done front and rear drums. New wheels, new tires, and a new problem with the engine :( Car starts fine...idles in park...idles in neutral...once i shift to drive or reverse, car shuts off. Engine starts to smoke a little, and it then becomes tough to start it back up.

I am not very engine savvy, and have had all of the work done by a place called the Mustang Collection down in Miami Florida...

Anyone know anything? am i going to the wrong people? what steps should i take next? rebuild the engine? sell and start fresh?

BTW, this is a 1966 Mustang Coupe.

Strating to get very frustrated with the car, and would really love to get it working like i was told it would be.

Auto tranny also...

Idle speed may be too low, or advance not correctly set. It's possible if you have a load-o-matic, that they set it with the vacuum off.

I wouldnt put it past any mechanic to give you a tune-down instead of a tune-up. Been done before...

Id bring it back there, get an estimate and explanation of exactly whats wrong, then go somewhere else and get it done...from now on.

Sounds like its a fuel air ratio problem, possibly specifically a choke or idle air screw problem. Does it start up fine when its already been run awhile (warm condition)? Does the problem just happen when you start it when it hasnt been started in awhile? (cold condition).

Sounds minor, unless you overheated it on the way to the shop, or if they beat on it while you were gone and they were supposed to be fixing the breaks.

Best thing to do is not accuse anybody until you know facts.

Mine did the same thing -- timing problem. Advance a little and go find a better mechanic!

Ugh, I always forget about the problem about mechanics "test driving" a car... I guess the ones form the tire store we took my moms car to get a tire put on and an alignment didnt know about the MPG gauge... Its a 6cyl cougar.. not that much of a performance car with its duratec engine... when I went there to get my alignment before her car I wonder how they drove it.. I bet they got a good laugh
