I have a question regarding the 221/US 200 block

Someone mentioned that the 221 uses the same oilpan and bellhousing as the US 200block.

I am interested in availability and cost to get a good 221 shortblock that I can put my Oz head on and drop in my '80 Stang.

Thanks for any info.

Mark, I am shipping a 221 soon to a guy in San Jose, Ca. For the crate size required, it is easy enough to put in a second shortblock and cable bell, so I intend doing this. The added benefit is it will enable some sharing of the freight costs if my buyer chooses to onsell the second unit.

I am not convinced the pan is the same as the US pans, so will be sending one. The crate volume determines the maximum unit weight, and I'm still well under it with two motors.

Apart from the block and bell, fuel pump, gasket sets, timing gears are all unique to Oz. Pushrods may be, too.

It's not a "walk in the park" to swap, but I can see it appealing to a reasonable number of folks. The twin height engine mounts are a pretty cool option. It might be a good "cheater" if you passed it off as a 200 in gambler's races.

Thats what I was wondering. I dont want to have to fabricate stuff as that will get expensive. But I do like the idea of 21 extra cubes.

My car currently has a C4 automatic but I have a T-5. Still debating swapping to manual.

I heard that Celica and/or Supra manual trannies bolt up or sumting li dat. I'll share the recipe once I get my hands on it.

Just an FYI, a rebuild kit wasn't that costly either.

You need the Dellow or CRs bellhousing to fit a Tojo box. They seem to prefer running hydro clutches, but there are ways around this. The steel case box is the one to go for. The Tremec will bolt up to the Toploader bells IIRC; any Oz manual bell can be drilled for a T/L.

do read my setup with the sierra [ europa car ] 5 gearbox , with an adapetplate a right bolt on and the drive shaft is fitting right in it ![ 23 spline ] got a crosmember fit for it , so duplicate the crosmember wil be np .
you will need a new clucthplate , the rest wil fit ! btw the box came with a complete clutch assambely including the clutchplate , but i did wanted a new 1 !
cost sofar: 5 gearbox 50'$ clutchplate 70$ pilot bearing 15 $ adapterplate made on my work [ got 3 of them made ] wil trade 1 for a with gauge folie set [about 25 $? ] plate is 8 m/m steel .
gear ratio is great with the standaard axle , but you wil need the speedo cable from the automatic becourse the input is on the other side of the box ! [ yunkyard part ? ]

Nice pictures. You are a detail man, with a heap of brains!

Depending on what Sierra 5-speed box, you can get a good combo. The old Cologne Capri (Hummer)/British Capri, Zephyr, Granada (Dagenham) gearboxes were used behind V-8's in NZ because Pommy and German stuff was easy to get and all early Ford V8's were not often auto. The out put shaft was the same spline on many, and the early Dagenham 3/4-speed was the same input spline too.

Just watch it if you 5-speed box is a 3.65:1 2.3/2.0 V6/2.0 OHC. Its a lot less strong than the 14 mm longer 2.8/2.9 V6 gearbox. Turbo Zakspeed Capri 2.8's with as little as 188 PS would spit those things apart unless the main shaft got diamond drilled or modified. About 205 lb-ft (27 kg/m) was about it in a 1300 kg car.

I was looking at using one in my Cortina ( Taunus) 2.3 V6 Turbo, but I wanted something stronger, so I got a US C4 auto.

The 5-speed has a nice gearshift, and is compact and still fairly tough, though. And in NZ, they are a dime a dozen. A great swap!

btw , it did came from a scorpio, not the sierra! for a nice daily driver it will do , your right ,there are not too strong for torque !

it is a realy cheap 5 gear project , its working [ shifting grate ! and good ratio with the orginal rearaxle ] and i did learn a lots of new things !
i,m more into doing it and see how it works than talking alot for how to maybe
the T5 is hard to get here and verry much money !!!!!!!!!!!
i will in the future adding a T5 when i got the money , but this 1 wil do for just now !

It's a great job, Harrie. Perfect application for it. T5's only came in RS 500's and other Cosworth's in Europe. I'd love one too!
