I just bought a 200...

I saw the engine running in the car before I paid $100 for it with a 3 spd. I believe it to be original to the car.

Any suggestions on what I should do to the motor before dropping it into my 65 Fastback (it currently has a non-original 6 cylinder that hasn't been started in over ten years.)

I have a head gasket and oil pan gasket and plan to tune it up, change the freeze plugs...

Any advice is appreciated, Thanks

and welcome to The FORUM!!!

First, tell us more about your new 200 and what you want from it once it is in your 65?

What is the casting code on the block? The head? What do you know about the new engine?

There is alot to offer here, but you will need to be more specific about what you have and what you want to end up with. What is your budget? Help us out to help you out.

Adios, David

And I'll say if for him: Buy David's book The Falcon Performance Handbook, linked in his signature. You will get more information there in one place than you can find in any other location. David's too humble to make that claim, so I'll make it instead.

It will really help you set reasonable goals and understand the potential of our favorite production engine.

The only suggestion I have that hasn't already been made is, if your not planning on any modding and just want to install it as is would be to install a new rearmain seal and the crankshaft seal in the timing cover. You can do any of the other seals at any time with out pulling the motor. Also while you have the oil pan off I'd clean out the oil pump pickup and just look it all over.

Thanks for all the replies. I think for now, I just want an economical driver. Motor casting # C5DE 6015 H - Trans # C4DR7006 WS

Alright, '65 block. Where are you located? I have a late model completely rebuilt cylinder head if you're by luck in the area that you can have for cheap. Since the engine's out and apart, knowing me, I'd do rings and bearings and get everything cleaned up. It's not THAT expensive if you build it youself, and you'll be a lot happier with the longevity of your "brand new" engine. Rebuild your carburetor and get it nice and clean, put a duraspark II ignition system in there, hit the gas, get there fast. =) Other than that, you should have gotten a compression test on the engine before you bought it, then you'd know what kind of shape the engine is really in.

and my tip is change out the freeze(welsh) plug at the back of the block its covered by the flywheel -whilst engine is on the ground.

if it starts leaking its engine out time

note there are two - one is a water galley plug -which can rust through

other is end of the cam bore tunnel. and doesnt rust through

I'm in the San Fran Bay Area.

Do the block and trans #'s mean anything? Not that its important but where would the date codes be, if any?

Should I change both (along with the ones on the side of the block?)

You're in my Area. Lookout!

Altho no one has taken me up on my offer yet, which is odd.

Wilhelm... how cheap? :)

How cheap for the head? I'll let it go for like 75$. I need money! I'll even ship it for ya if you want it. Brand new rebuilt head, beautiful. =) Big log and wide carb base, etc.

Shipping would be a disaster with the weight. I like that price, however.

Not sure why I need it, but feel like I do ;)

That same feeling is why I have 2 complete front ends, 1 rear end, 1 engine, 2 3 spd transmissions, 4 2V carbs, 3 1V carbs, a 5.0 EFI upper air intake, a BMW wire holder and a whole bunch of other crap in my garage that I'm not even sure what I was planning on doing with it.

I have figured out what I'm going to do with my spare engine block. if I ever buy a boat, it's going to be the anchor for my mooring line. That is unless I actually rebuild it first, then it may end up back in a car.

i wouldnt bother with the cam tunnel plug - its covered in oil internally so wont rust through -
BUt the water one is adifferent story .
they are only a few bucks at the shop for the plug - so may was well change it when out - 2 1/16" plug

if your not doing much to rest of block ie rebore etc then the other ones on the side of the block- if they dont show signs of leaking i would leave - can allways get access to these no problems at a later date even with engine in.
