I Think I've Died and Gone To Heaven!

I picked up my car today from the muffler shop. They ran dual exhaust into Flowmaster 50's. I started that thing up and I almost started crying. It sounded so beautiful, like music to my ears. So I drove it back to the shop for them to finish timing and tuning everything, and finish up any loose ends. He timed it by ear and I drove it around the parking lot. It is so much smoother and powerful than my old engine. There was a guy there that had a pink 66 mustang with a 200. When I started my car up he was shocked. He said," Hey, what engine you got in there?" I told him a rebuilt 200. He said," Man, that thing sounds great. It sounds like you got a 289 small block in there". He couldn't stop smiling. He was probably thinking of what he could do to his 200 and the potential that it has. Well, my car will be done later today. The mechanic did say that my carb is the only thing holding me back and I need to get a 2bbl. Does anybody here have a Holley 5200 or Weber32/36 in good shape that you want to sell? Once I get that done this thing should be awesome! :D :D

I don't have a digital camera or any way to record the sound but I might be able to try to borrow a neighbors digital camera.

so now after reading Titleist's post, i just got off the phone with the mufller shop and am taking my pony into the shop tomorrow to have my exhaust done, cant wait to hear how she sounds, i will post an audio clip as soon as she returns from the stable.

How good are Flowmaster 50s for a single out? 2" pipe or what? I still have the stock muffler above the pumpkin.

I picked up the car tonight and they got it timed and tuned. Sounds even better now. Really nice lopey idle with the FSPP 264 110* cam. The car has a lot more power now after the rebuild. I think I made a good choice with the Flowmaster 50's. They are nice at idle and I don't have hardly any interior drone, just a little when taking off but not unpleasant at all. It is louder than a lot of other mufflers but I'm eighteen and don't mind the loudness and have always loved the flowmaster tone. Anyway, I just wanted to thank everybody here with answering my questions and giving me the info to fix up my car. Without you guys none of this would have been possible. Thanks alot guys! :D

Just for the record,I've already been DEAD before.......but,there waz nothing to do,so,I came back...... 8) :!: OO6./The-X-Or-Six! Oh,by the way,I'm GLAD the 'shop got ya sorted out,Titleist-16  ! Good luck with it!

I met you last weekend when i went to look at some of your 200 stuff.
I have a Holley 350 Cfm carb that I used to have on my Argie set up, but i got the brand new Holley 500cfm now. It's just sitting in my garage and I am local, so let me know if you want to see it.

I was driving on the freeway today breaking in my engine and I noticed that if I hold the gas pedal steady at about 30mph it starts to misfire and not run good and also at 70mph. It also runs real rough when I first start it and wants to die when I put it in gear. Does this sound like a timing issue? The idle screw is as far out as it can go so it isn't that. If it's not timing what else could it be?

The idle mixture screw increases fuel when you screw it out. It normally only needs 1 1/2 or 2 turns. If you have to turn it out much further, you may have a vacuum leak.

How can I check for vacuum leaks?

if it's the air fuel mixture screw that is all the way out you've got to start there, like mustang six said 1 to 1 and a half turns out is a good starting point.
make sure the carb didn't loosen up. did you turn the mixture screw out or did the shop give it to you that way?if they did, i'd ask them why...

i've used w-d40 to check for vacuum leaks, spray around the carb with the engine running and listen for the idle to improve.

check the points and condenser if you have them

Have fun...

I've got a Weber 32/36 that I bought new and ran for about 6 months before I put a Weber 38 on. I was going to put it up on ebay and just haven't gotten around to it.

I got my exhaust done at a place called Bro Muffler in Huntington Beach. I supplied the mufflers and they ran the dual exhaust just how I wanted for $150. Cheapest place I had found in this area.
