ID This Part Quick! Please

This was laying inside the head behind the thermostat! I'm guessing an oil galley plug, but how did it get there? I didn't notice it yesterday when I pulled the thermostat. Like a minature freeze plug. Can't feel any place it would have came from.

I thought the oil gallery plug was bigger, but I'm not sure...that would be my guess though; stray oil gallery or freeze plug.

I believe the freeze plugs running down the passenger side of the head are 1", but not sure as to how it would have gotten there. Would think if someone accidently drove a freeze plug into the head when trying to replace one of those on the passenger side that it would be more 'beat up' looking.

Yeah and I could see someone putting the head on its side and going pop-pop-pop installing new freeze plugs, then 'pop' one goes all the way in and he just pops in another (not taking the time to fish that one out)...figuring now you got a spare

It looks more like carbon deposits(not rusted) on it, like under valve cover, than anything having sealed water. Engine hasn't been coming up to temp so very little heat. Hopefully it was hanging open the thermostat. Guess I'll put it back together and see what happens. Just can't think of anyplace it could have come loose and wound up there. Had enough trouble getting the bolt that broke out of the head. Thanks guy's.

Could be the metal content or coating of the plug causing it to oxidize to that blackish color. Other than the large diamter freeze plug at the rear of the head, I can't think of anything else that could work its way into the head water passages except maybe part of an old thermostat or temp sender...but it doesn't really look like a piece of either one of those.

Not sure what stat temp you've been running Explorer, but I've been pretty happy with the operating temps on my engine since going to a 195* (after completely rehabbing my cooling and heating system...puts out good heat in cold temps). Even did fine, running cool enough, during our record heat wave last summer here in Texas. Granted I wasn't driving in the peak of the 110*+ days, but driven plenty in ~100* evenings.

I wasn't even sure if there was a thermostat in it, so that's why I decided on a new one. No markings at all on the old one, but I just finished putting a 195* in it. Took me all day yesterday and this morning getting the snapped off bolt out. Luckily it broke at the bolt head so I had room to weld a nut on it. I'll fill her up and see what happens here in a bit. Simple thing, but I always have trouble with them leaking.

All together, all well, no leaks, engine temp up a bit by the stock gauge. Heat still not great, but I'll see if the kid freezes again today.

If it's the "grey ghost" I'll assume it's not the air hoses or a mouse in that lill outlet aimed @ his feet.

Not the Bronco. His Mustang. Might wind up giving him the Bronco for the winter, but I really don't want him driving that with my investment and his inexperience.

The lill piece (only 1 view, does it have the pointed end?) looked like the nose offa thermostat.

There are several of those core plugs that size in the head under the intake log. My guess it that someone tapped on in too far and left it there for you to find. I imagine that normal water flow moved it to the thermostat.

Everything seems normal, so must have been there for awhile. Hate finding extra parts. Thanks guy's.
Chad: It's definately a plug, like a minature freeze plug. Not worried about the road conditions as much as the boy's driving experience. Thats why I haven't done the body and paint on the Mustang yet.
