Idle Question

I've got a 170 in a 64 Ford Falcon. Done a complete tune up. Eliminated the points with a petronix. New Carb. Got the carb adjusted and engine timed. Still has a rough idle and feels like its surging at highway speeds. I've checked for and vacuum leaks. Could the old distributor just be worn out? Do I need to update to a newer dist? Thanks

Yes the distrib. could be worn out check to see if you can feel any side ways movement of the shaft.
Yes it is possible that you need to update to a newer distrib. depends on the carb you are using as a rule of thumb if you change to a later style carb (without a SCV) than you also need to change out the distrib to a later style with a mechanical (centrifugal) advance. Also have you done a compression test to see what the condition of your motor is in? If your 170 has mechanical lifter cam have you checked the valve lash yet to see if its correct?

Nice rig.
Welcome to the forum AND site! Good luck w/the trouble shooting.
Any mods planned? What's yer current MPGs? Thanks!

I've had surgeing on my engine combo, with a rebuilt carb and DUI, what I changed was the jet size's were too small, put bigger ones in and was good for about a month, then I found my distributor bolt loose, haven't had another episode since. still try'n to get the most out of it though.

I lean towards the distributor more, it's possible that it's loose or the vacuum canistor doesn't work or is try'n to but messes up timing or a simple spring could be missing. Take a look at it, make sure eveything is working, I would blow on the vacuum canistor line and see if it can hold air, don't suck as those fumes as nasty. then see if the cap is in-tact, and see if you get a steady ignition pulse on each plug by using the timing light on each wire, and last if you still can't find it, see if the plugs are fowled up.

seems horrible
that's subjective language ie it's not a specific number which is more clear in communication (geez, I sound judgmental). Lookin 4 a number (as a curiosity...)

Anyway, that yr is a load-a-matic & SCV combo I believe (carb/dizzy). Wondering if when U did the mod there was the compatabile match w/each? Good luck, keep talkin w/us...

Well my current plan is to ditch the stock carb and distributor. Ordered from Classic inlines their Duraspark II Ignition Kit and Weber 32/36 DGV "Carb Swap" Kit. I really hope that will help it to run smooth.
