I'm stuck at home because my darling mustang has decided to be a pain in the butt. I drive and it just dies, total loss of all electrical. So i crossed over the starter relay and i was back in action...but it keeps doing this...and it's getting worse, i'm now afraid to even drive it anywhere. After this first started happening i replaced the starter relay and it worked fine, but after a day i was right back where i started, and twice as frustrated. So...any ideas?? I'm supposed to be going to california speedway tomorrow for a formula race. Right now it's looking like i won't be able to even make it there so i can race. So any help or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks

Brandon

Your starter relay needs to have a good ground to the metal bracket of the relay. Your ignition switch has to feed voltage to the small post nearest the battery cable. I have used my keys to short those 2 together to turn the engine over from under the hood. If i don't want it to start, I'll pull the 2nd small posts wire to prevent powering the coil.

If your dome light, radio, and every light are also dead, It is probably corrosion on the battery cable and posts. Use a wire brush type cleaning tool made for this so the lead isn't black after the corrosion has been removed. When I have had everything electrical die, I've fixed it fast with a knife stabbed onto the junction of the battery post and cable clamp. When I got home, I cleaned up the posts. There was little corrosion on mine. Another time I had so much corrosion that I could not loosen the clamp, so I pounded a small nail into the junction to get me by for a few days.

So you think it is either a bad connection at my battery or bad ground on relay? I just put in the relay brand new, cleaned the connections on it and tightinged it up snug. I haven't checked my battery connections yet
though.

does that thing have a pick up coil in the dizzy? had one of those go bad once, would just shut off while driving, really sucked.

8) make sure your voltage regulator is hooked and working(had that happen before), and make sure the wire from the alt to the battery is also hooked up and allowing current through(had that problem as well).

Make sure the neg cable bolted to the motor is also clean and rust free! Then check all grounding staps/cables/wires.

The only times that I have lost total electrical are when the negative ground worked loose. The car can and will run without the positve terminal connected once it has been started. One time my ground cable on the engine came loose on a car.

Well, I have lost all electrics on a motorcycle before too, but it was a short in a wire, and the old bike did not have any fuses or breakers at all.

Now i'm getting frustrated... I cleaned all the connections, battery, ground cables, everything i could think off. It worked fine, went out driving in the country just incase. Everything was going fine, get back into town, hit the fan switch inside....I tdies on me going into an intersection...I luckly got it restarted and a block away before it gives out again... so i coast into a residential street, and that was about as far as i got...So as far as i know, it's something with the fan...I unhooked it, tried...nothing. I hooked back up, pulled fuse...nothing. The only way it would even run for longer then a few seconds was if i had the fan on, to the left side (high setting) fuse in, and it would still die??? What in the heck is going on??? can i by pass it anyway?? I got lucky and the owner of a near by place let me park it there, but i had to walk like 3 miles home. I need to get it running though, only transportation i have... so i need major help because i have to walk back there to fix it. I'll do anythign to get it running and dependable!!! Please...I'm desperate...I have a friend flying in and no way to get her. I'm STUCK AT MY APPARTMENT ALONE... Thanks again

What kind of car do you have and what year that would help us help you a little, it could be the ignition box on most cars they are on the inside fender well on the drivers side

It's a 65 mustang, standard 200, no upgrades on engine, automatic trans. Like i said, when i flicked on the fan, it died and spazed out again... Thanks

So you don`t have the stock fan ? my best gess would be that some one messed with the wrong wire when they hooked it up , a good start would be to trace the wires and see where they are going and see if it was some how sliced into the ignition box or coil.

It happened when i hit the inside fan switch, like just the stock heater fan, not my cooling fan in the engine bay. I tried unplugging it and nothing would happen. It sparks and fires up if i cross the starter relay over...I get exhaust smoke and everything, but as soon as i un bridge the connection, i loose spark. I tried all kinds of things, still only short spurts if anything.

It's starting to sound like bad ignition switch. You can't go wrong by replacing it, and it might just cure your prob. When you short across the solenoid you are bypassing the switch. :?

You talking about the key ignition switch?? Like the actual one i put my key in, and if so, are there any places where i can get one fast?? Thanks

One other thing. There is a braided, flat ground wire from the block to the chassis. Try cleaning that and use a little larger sheet metal screw on the body side.

you can get them at purdy much any parts store or junk yard (if the junk yard has a 66 stang)

It's a pretty standard Ford part, so, yeah, any good parts store should have one. Check to see if they will also rent/lend you the tool for removing the bezel (retaining ring).
Do check that ground wire from the block/head to the firewall.

i did clean that one, it also has the fan ground to it. The braided wire goes from the fire wall to one of my starter bolts. Maybe i just need to try can clean it more...Just gonna be along walk so hopefully i can get it fixed the first time. thanks
